Herbicidal Tendencies

Post by mkarger » November 18th, 2012, 5:42 am

There’s a certain desperateness you find when you realize your authority figures are idiots.
You’re liberated from the immense absurdity of the panopticon.

You don’t give a damn what they see
Or how they judge you.

But you’re imprisoned by the destitution of unchartered life.
The path diverts from one worn down by heavy traffic.
It grows aimless and frightening. Struggle looms behind every bend.
Doubt creeps into your marrow like a cancer.
Rumination over fickle inconsequential b------- becomes a part of your consciousness.

Through the tedium you fight against a force that you can’t quite locate
Because it’s always behind you.
It’s your own idiocy
A parasitic twin
Huge
Twisted and ugly.
A ghastly protrusion that claws desperately at the self-demolition and mistakes you chose to ignore.
Run, sprint, stumble and toil.
But its moronic gash of a face is waiting
To hiss with delight when you fall down in exhaustion
Because that’s when your idiot grows into the ground like a muscular vine.

The only way to begin again is to attack.
Cut away at your idiot as it screams out in agony.
But in it’s clouded eyes sparkle a look of erotic disjunction and you realize
You’re screaming and
You’re in agony and
The blood that covers your hands is your own.

And now you know that the path you’ve so defiantly suffered down,
Your cloak into solitude,
Has left you with just that.
Nothingness for a thousand revelations in any cardinal direction.

So you wait.
And you try not to pay any heed to the mammoth idiot just over your shoulder.
You wait in hope that some other eager mind has found this path.
You push back the suspicion that when you abandoned authority,
You deserted yourself.

sometimes we choose rebellion just for its own sake which is not always the smartest choice. this poem, with its beautifully written metaphor, explains how we can find ourselves all alone because we refused to see the wrongness of our choices in our arrogance. when we discovered it, it was too late.

First congratulation on the spotlight, a well deserved choice! Wow, this hit hard almost like a metaphorical bio of sorts. I could see myself and fears in your lines and it spooked me a bit, but that made it just a great write for me. When I read such a well penned piece and I take away so much, you as a writer have done an excellent job!

Oh damn.

This is incredible. I've read nothing like it before. I appreciate your wonderful honesty and terseness. Your perspective and understanding of the subject.

Not to mention, I felt like this was written for me..right now.

What a pleasure. Thank you for this. I hope you dont mind me saving it.

I found this to be raw and powerful. Very well written, enjoyed the word choices, structure and tone.

This reminded me so much of a book I read several year's ago, called "Taming Your Gremlin" which we all have. The side's of us, that we are constantly looking over our shoulder's at and either running away from or trying to cope with....This piece showed a great depth of insight to oneself I thought and in both the word behavior and imagery is daunting to say the least....A very well written piece that I can understand why it might bother some to read it....Most deserving of the spotlight...CONGRAT'S! The true rebel is the one who admits that they do not, in fact, know all the answers. Our culture likes to put the renegade on a pedestal, always examining their righteous indignation (genuine or perceived) but rarely the flaws in such an approach. That is what makes this poem so special: it questions those who question authority; it questions that part of all of us. Exceptionally well written and unhinged in emotion and absolutely deserving of the spotlight. Well done.

You bring something irreplaceable to each and every day.
Or you used to anyway.
But this world couldn't hold you
And you slipped free
Yeah this world couldn't hold you
And you slipped free
Without me.

Thanks for the support everyone. I wrote this in a fit of frustration and kind of threw it aside. I did not anticipate this garnering so much attention.

There seems to be such a mix of emotions in this one, there is definitely some very dark irony in there, in fact I think you play upon the dark element very well throughout this poem, particularly in terms of representing the speaker's reaction to seeing their ideals shattered. Excellent diction throughout and a thought provoking, yet personally relevant, poem.
Congratulations on the spotlight.
