Track Number Seven

TRACK NUMBER SEVEN

I hope this verse,
Receives a quorum,
From friends and members,
Of the Model Train Forum.

The hobby we share,
Oft times with great flare,
Gives ease to our mind,
And smiles to mankind.

Skill levels diverse.
In our universe.
From building a table,
For those who are able,
To laying of track,
We have the knack.

The trains that are run,
In circular fashion,
Provide us great fun,
And reflect our passion.

Though the rooms fill with smoke,
And far too much noise,
When the trains are running,
All men become boys.

From the mountain down,
Into a hand built town,
Under the trestle, over the bridge,
And once again, up the ridge,
Our trains travel many miles,
And cause many smiles.

When the end does arrive,
And we cease to survive,
Somewhere in heaven,
Runs an O Gauge train,
On track number seven.

A lovely ode of sorts and wonderful extended metaphor, equating our lives with that lonely whistle of the midnight express perhaps. Yet filled with the vistas and adventures we create along the way. Well done WC and cheers! - Dan

It often puzzles me why women and girls do not share the same fervour for motor sport and model train racing and other male hobbies. While I didnt identify with the subject matter of this poem it is a nice little ode to that fervour.

jayn: You are 100% correct. This hobby, and many others are male dominated. I think it dates back to earlier times, when model trains were strictly given to male children at Christmas time. Many, if not most of the folks still in the hobby are the original recipients of those gifts. That said, the significant others, with these now grown, and mature fellows have come into their own within the hobby, and, do indeed enjoy it. There have been many attempts by manufacturers to offer trains for young girls, and, although those trains do sell out quite quickly, the young ladies do not seem to have the passion that their male counterparts share as a life-long interest.

thank you for the comments. It is always great to discuss my creations with others.

Hello Wes,
Well deserved and brilliantly written - most evocative ... of course, I only had a clockwork train (in which I caught my hair - ouch). But, seriously, that 'cease to survive' is redolent of steam hissing under the footplate.

In friendship,
Eric.

One man I knew built a special shed for his hobby with murals of scenes on his walls to continue his fantasy. I was experiencing pure pleasure watching him display his passion for his hobby, while my husband was intense on finding out what various switches would do. I like to imagine that he's in heaven still enjoying his trains.
Congratulations on the TPS Spotlight.

Amazing how you have build up a Whole lengthy poem about this topic which seemed to lead the Reader
on a Journey into various landscaped times. I felt the Train in the poem also drove through the various stagës of life. Great piece, Wes!
