First Love

I met my first love the first time I opened my eyes
It was only through glass but I held his hand with mine.
He told me, “Breathe, honey, you have to breathe.”
I tried so hard but couldn’t.
Something’s wrong with me.

“You’re perfect,” he said.
“You’re beautiful and strong.
I’m right here with you, and soon you’ll see mom.
She’s sick right now, but not for long.
Just breathe, baby Bri, so you can come home.
Stay with me.”

Since day one, I loved him, and I knew he loved me.
He never left my side even with split custody.
Overnight visits every other week.
How many nights I cried watching his car leave my street.
“Stay with me....”

My first heartbreak hit and I collapsed at his door.
I slept in his bed that night after I cried on the floor.
He didn’t say much, but it was enough.
“I’m so sorry, darling. You have to breathe.”
I tried so hard but couldn’t.
Something’s wrong with me.

“You’re perfect,” he said.
“You’re beautiful and strong.
I’m right here with you.
You did nothing wrong.
Just breathe, you have to breathe.
Stay with me.”

I moved away for love in August 2010
Left my first love 7 hours away so I could get ahead.
He cried for weeks.
I told him to breathe.
He said, “I could never ask you to stay with me.”
I said, “Thank God you always have.”

He remembers to call on Mother’s Day in honor of what I lost.
“You’re going to be a wonderful mother. Don’t give up.”
My first love means everything to me,
Taught me to love unconditionally.
Held my hand since the first time I couldn’t breathe.
His love is beautiful and strong,
So blessed that it stays with me.

so glad you had such a great father in your life. its hard sometimes when we are separated from our parents. I was never able to really know my father so I feel that missing piece. sorry for your loss for the baby. perhaps someday when the time comes your family will grow.
