Mind at Ease

Post by mooskadams » October 10th, 2012, 4:02 am

A chill runs through the air
A scent of uncertainty flows
Perhaps, within distant rows
Of cultivated orchard stands
Wisdom lingers, and then goes

The winds shift, and compose
Such a glorious movement
But everything that was sent
To light, is lost to time
For we treasure not improvement

Treasure, of a heavenly bent,
Has no reason today to follow
Wisdom, for the wise can wallow
Far from discomforting thoughts
In castles cold and hollow

During times of sorrow
Man grinds and grows, but we
Oh, damnable masses we
Are blessed with easy refuge
And blessed with apathy

Every autumn first presents a plea
To glance about, to understand
Then veils a lurking reprimand
How dare we feel its frigid wind
And not cower in its hands

The air bows to its demands
But we give it not a thought
For in the hollows that we sought
We can call upon experience
But wisdom, we cannot

I love the stanza about the wind shifting. Beautiful phrase. This is a lovely piece of nature poetry. Well done!

A juxtaposition for sure between the elements of nature like the wind and the orchard and then the foolishness and simplicity of man. It's a little bit of condemnation perhaps?

I enjoyed the work you put into the rhyming scheme and the six stanzas of five lines each.
It is sad to think of the wise wallowing in castles, cold and hallow, far from discomforting thoughts.
I like the way autumn is pictured here as a force to wake us up so we do not slip so easily into easy refuge and apathy.
'Every autumn first presents a plea
To glance about, to understand
Then veils a lurking reprimand
How dare we feel its frigid wind
And not cower in its hands.'
Congratulations on TPS recognition.

I find an unfortunate truth pervading this piece--it speaks to me of our disconnect with our own history, our lack of ability to learn from our mistakes, and the shallow comforts of the now that we prefer. Remarkably well constructed, and reading it with yesterday's election in mind, remarkably saddening. I hope there are more poems if this quality to be found on this site.
