Love as 8

Post by jeremyf » May 11th, 2013, 4:16 pm

Mine more than predictable
-heights of mountains, depth of seas-
Even all those counted grains of sand.

Like that looping lazed sign of infinitesimals
-roundly written rested on its side-
This is greater than anything real.

Stand it up, snowman stacked
-keeping all the whimsy-
Show the truth in highs and lows.

Scribble mine down as eight.

When Tolken professes beauty in "cellar door",

my response has to be "violent's womb".

Ah, so clever. I pondered what significance the 8 would have, and the fourth line hit me like a brick! I would like to think those more numerically gifted than me would be all over that. For me, what that symbol represents is beyond comprehension, so it's the perfect central theme to a romantic poem which manages to be as deeply loving as anything I can remember seeing on this board, without resorting to anything as direct as simply stating the feeling. The way you play with the image throughout makes this a double-delight on the re-read, as I could appreciate the nod to the hourglass in the opening on another level second time around.
The 'eureka' moment of line four was one of the feelings which makes me love poetry. There's still a playful side to this which makes me smile, but the deeper context is brilliant, infinitely so!

Oh wow slick this is my friend! I love the way the meaning are hidden just waiting for the reader to dicover the brilliant gems hidden within this piece. The snowman analogy was brilliant! Kind of let's not make it so serious and the part of the whimsy is just another layer for the reader to discover. The metaphor is just spot on, and like Mick I too had to go back and figure out the reference to the number 8! Now a mathlete like Dew will catch in the first read! Suberb stuff Aladdin! This has got to be on my top twenty list! Bookmarked for sure! It does dazzle the reader!

I also thought this was quite a clever write. To me the message was celebrating the reality of love, like, "Yeah, love knows no bounds (it's infinite), but let's be realistic here." You've managed to turn the cliches of the heights of mountains and the depths of the sea into something interesting because the speaker is suggesting that love in comparison to these and to "infinity" are "greater than anything real." I love the idea of turning the infinity vertical to create a true number, and the way you brought in the idea of highs and lows with the vertical shape. The snowman thing, as others have mentioned, was cool. To me, it makes me think of the coldness that comes into even the purest of loves, but the fun of it as well. Very clever indeed, the whole piece. Great job. Thank you for sharing this with us!

This is the kind of writing that frustrates me. Only because I want to write something like it but can't. Thanks for posting it, it's great.

Although I see no sense in echoing the comment of former readers, I agree with them completely. It is a poem to be read more than just once and I confess I needed some repetition to know about the number 8. A real piece of art from great skill and totally impressing and amazing. Thank you. Well, just look at the structure! Man, that's neat!
I really love how you focused on the infinity sign, as I would like to focus on its shape, mathematically speaking it has it's max and min points, just like the "heights of mountains, depth of seas" in that sign, and then you used its meaning in a double way, one for the reader to be intrigued by- to figure out what's the reason behind the change of the projection, and I think that's special beautiful touch in this, and that change is two that is well known for the poet, himself.
This is a very deep and yes, I'll say it too, 'clever work.
A striking love poem.

Mathematics in love poem is always an interesting read -- including this one. The max and min points (which prompts a picture of a sine wave on my mind), the symbol of infinity and the number eight (which, to me, are related to each other like the relation between dream and reality)... The snowman part was a delight, too -- I giggled when I read it! Brilliantly written, jeremy. Loved the message a lot. Bravo!

Ok..........so.........the winds are gone out of my sails and I am left adrift on a sea names "Whatosay"?
We have, after all, used the following words: clever, gifted, perfect, romantic, loving, double-delight, playful, brilliant, slick, whimsy, suberb,dazzle............some more clever(s), interesting, infinite, cool, great, impressing, amazing, neat, groovy...........what else can I add? Exceptional, outstanding, delightful, spot on..........Loved it. Very, very well done.

Very strong message and unique display of using the number 8. Really loved the emotion your presented towards a number, was a strong force and was a pleasure to read.

A stand out poem that is well deserving of the spotlight. I did have to go to a different place in my brain to fathom the depths but that of course is why it works, well done mx

Okay everything that could possibly be said has already been said above regarding your write. To reiterate what bay said because she I think is a very accurate spot on analogy imho. The number 8 signifies more than a handful and is enough to make humans content. This piece is brilliantly inked and is a well deserved spotlight. Way to go!
