Weeping Willow

Weeping willow why is it you weep?
What pain inside you slumbers deep?
Is your cry in sorrow for those who have died?
Cradled within your roots they now reside

Do you weep for the ghosts who walk beneath you?
Torn from their lives and all they knew
Is it their memories, their sorrows and pains
Are your limbs bowed with the weight of their names?

Weeping willow what burdens you must hold
To look so weary, worn and old
You shade their graves and bow your head
Forever in mourning for those who are dead

In summer sun and winter sleets
Still the weeping willow weeps.

A/N: In certain cultures the willow tree is associated with ghosts or planted on graves in the belief that the spirit will flow into the willow and have an easier time reaching the sky.

Powerfully composed, with evocative imagery and a beautiful use of language.

Reading this I couldn't help but think of the poem Vada reads in class in the movie My Girl dedicated to Thomas J. So horribly sad but the personification used is what brings it up a notch.
