The Roof
Tonight, I lie upon the roof
I take the stairs, one at a time
As each falls below, my chest settles into my open palms
And reaches out, then, as my steps end
For the latch which with a snap
The metal sighs along its hinges and I feel our stomach twisting out the door
We step, and do not glance behind but only feel
Strip off our tether and leave them in a careless pile
A pile of leather tethers by the door
Allow our naked toes to lead us as our thoughts unravel in the heavy dark
No frequency tempts us to lose our minds tonight
And our feet tingle as they float upon the air, our backs dirty from the roof below
Below is only space and time
We fail to see the stars because our eyes are brighter
Wider, than the spherical horizon which cups the backs of our minds
Letting our memories slide, side by side
To welcome forgotten questions through our permeable skin
We do not ask of ourselves, and you do not ask either
You stand quietly as we lie
As we whisper with our hands and let our toes dangle towards the world
You stand and look at your shoes
At the pile of ours
You reach through the muggy air on the dirty roof and tug at your shoestring
And slide off the edge
As we float away, granules of inexistence running slowly into time
And we sink deeper into the cement
The waves our minds have fashioned tug us farther from this shore
Till soon we have nothing but a past
Past the time our hands could whisper to each other, softly
We were bobbing, but tonight
Tonight I lie upon the roof
The Roof

Re: The Roof
Lots to like here CV: "and we sink deeper into the cement" blew me away.
This seems to be a very stylized recollection with a tinge of remorse for something lost; something more than just the time. High marks for your imagery and cheers! - Dan

Re: The Roof
This has a very trippy feel to it, I like that heightened sense of things the toes stepping out onto the roof, I got a bit confused by the other person standing and watching but you have some really strong lines, too many to call out. very much enjoyed, Keith

Re: The Roof
stunning work!!
All the talk of feet and shoes implies being grounded (to me)
as opposed to the floating sensation that was experienced in the past...
