Surrealism revisited

Post by trell11 » June 9th, 2012, 10:13 am

This can fit in so many catagories but I found a home here for now.

This dream almost seems surreal
Am I alive or not?
I see you in clothes from Nordstroms
meanwhile I wear rags
and you drive such a nice car and spend your money so very well
I don't ask for a handout because I don't want any
I have earned everything I got in life
Except now
Now it seems I was pushed
I use to be close to where you were at
With your kids in pink strollers and princess outfits
Drinking Starbucks coffee and enjoying vacation trips
And though it all you are happy and without a care in the world
I would like to think I was once.
When I worked hard in school and my profession
Trying for more but gradually getting less
Am I worth the minimum wage that haunts me?
Giving me delusions of self worth and self pity
As the jobs dried up blindly I kept trying
Unaware that nobody wanted me
Either" too old" or "not the right sex" or "not pretty enough"
Were things I could only imagine they would say
As I would evaluate the people they did hire
Yet again now I go back to school
To try something new
And it again seems surreal
Because the years of being out of work took its toll on my body and mind
Growing self drought and degraded self image
This would only hamper my progress
The only thing I can do is try to change
Change who I am
Change what I think
and try to be more like the others I see in my this nightmarish dream
Today I bought a box of fortune cookies at the $0.99 cent store
So each day I could have something to forward to.

Really liked this...reminded me of watching people walk around as if life is easy, as if there is no danger, no sadness, no tragedy...but we know the truth...it stalks them just out of sight...their joy isn't ease, it's ignorance. Once you know you can't un-know what the world can do to you....awesome piece! - Dew

Love this, my favorite Morrison line comes to mind "money beats soul" and I also really liked this piece, I like how you are saying you need to change because Im also in need.

All I am going to say is wow. This is definitely spotlight material. So many folk are out there right now not knowing why they suddenly lost their jobs and their livelihood and now have nowhere to go. It's a harsh world.

This is such a great poem! You show us a side we often forget about if we haven't lived in that way of living. Well penned, well deserved and congratulations!

Amazing analysis. All who read this, young or old, will relate at some stage to these observations. You capture the indifference of modern life built by faceless society. It reminds me of the predictions studied in the film Gattaca where only the genetically perfect are permitted to succeed. Congratulation on the spotlight.

I think many people will be able to relate to this; no matter how hard they struggle, and can't catch a break, they see others in life seemingly land on their feet all the time. It's frustrating for sure, but there was something about the ending of this which made me feel like the shred of hope the speaker had left might be enough to sustain them.
Congratulations on the spotlight!

A great piece from your pen and one I think many could identify with in today's rocky economy...the emotion's come through so well in your word's and the imagery is spot on and so surreal....Great spotlight piece! Congrat's! Musie

Thank you all for your kind comments. Things are slowly getting better for me but not without hardships. I am glad many of you was able to identify with this piece and attach a meaning to it. As I love to share in my writing a bit of my self and soul so that you may peer down as see something that touches you. I just found out this made the spotlight a week ago and I was elated. Thanks again musie, enaeem12, crimsonrose91, moe , everhopeful , Royston Vasey, Ladywildalice, gooseberry , SirFleshwound , SwingingPistol , Dexsta Ray , songofmeadow, Chelle and dew.
