Remembering Me

Post by sunsetgrey » September 8th, 2012, 5:10 am

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. There is no cure for the disease, which worsens as it progresses, and eventually leads to death. In the early stages, the most common symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events. As the disease advances, symptoms can include confusion, irritability and aggression, mood swings, trouble with language, and long-term memory loss.
Remembering Me

She sits in her glass room misting the mirror
With her breath
As if to say-
Here, I am, still alive; while

Her fingers, as brittle and fragile as new icicles
Or freshly blown glass
Touch the framed memorials
Of the people she once knew

She smiles gently as she
She imagines them waving from the windows
Of an old car, pressing their fingers against
The glass pane- goodbye, goodbye

As they left, she reaches for the blank telephone
That rings a riddle she cannot decipher
The voice says her name, quivering, quietly
A sharp pain, like the broken glass that

Cut her hand as she bent to pick it up, yesterday-
Embarrassed, as the unfamiliar man sat holding his head
Crushing the two gold zeroes in his palm
The glass looks like crystal-snow,

She was saying, as he crossed the room fiercely
It is only me- she recoils, trembling at this stranger
Against the glass of the window,
I’m sorry I don’t-

Remember, he says, again
This pale, urgent groom with the forlorn face
Pushing the blank gold into her palm
Cool as the cellophane glass of a forgotten house

Near the sea, an old summer holiday-
She tastes the old salt of her tears
As he leaves, the faint ghost of the life she
Used to have, but now cannot remember,
Exactly, what she forgot.

To see the world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wildflower.
To hold Infinity in the palm of your hand and Eternity in the hour.
~ William Blake

Welcome to TPS.
Although this is incredibly emotive, it is so beautifully written. I think a subject like this breeds a tendency to write in an overblown style, but you have kept it so understated that it hurts to read and to see someone so fragile and imprisoned by this disease which robs them of their memory, making existence a frightening challenge. There is style and form too, it's more than just presenting someone's story, it's how you've presented it which elevates this to the next level.

Truly beautiful and heartbreaking. My grandmother suffered from this horrible disease. Thank you for tastefully imparting the agony of this in your poem.

Thank you for all your lovely comments. I was personally touched by the story of my own grandmother who is currently suffering from Alzheimers and wanted to present how the simple and everyday is such a challenge for these individuals and their families as well. Thank you for stopping by!

It's a very rare occasion that I get to say welcome to TPS and congratulations on the spotlight in the same post, but this is one of those occasions!
Beautifully written poetry and a most worthy spotlight, well done!

I have to reiterate something mentioned here which is that the piece is very emotive, almost (or even) overly so. But your word choices, and structure are damn wonderful. This is an example of a piece I read twice, and then save for later. It's a kind of poem that will stay with me for awhile.

I too Welcome you to TPS! And what a way to introduce yourself. This is not an easy topic to write about and it is definitely a devastating disease. I have worked with many and Alzheimer's victim in my life and you have expressed both the malady and the emotion's that go with it to a T in this work....So, so tragic for loved one's having to find way's to cope with this....Very well written and most deserving of the Spotlight..Congratulation's! A touching impression of the tragedy of this illness and the effect that it has on the loved ones around the sufferer. But.... you also indicate the one "redeeming" factor, and that is, that the affected person is not aware of it. Having had three close contacts with this problem, that has the one consolation that we have.

As mentioned earlier by everhopeful, your gentle understatement made this poem even more powerful.
Congratulations on a worthy spotlight.

First welcome and congratulations on a much deserved turn in the spotlight! This piece was so hauntingly sad and yet beautiful in a way. It was your eloquent words and they way you controlled them that gave that sense of beauty to the sadness of the piece. A lovely write. It was a wonderful piece, that I enjoyed so very much!
Thank you for sharing your memories and stories with us!

Only someone who has lived closed to this terrible disease could write as you have, this is heartbreaking but so well catalogued, very well deserved spotlight, meadow

Thank you all for the comments, once again, and am very honored to be in the spotlight and pleasantly surprised since I've only really been around for less than a week! I suppose it is easier to write about things that you've personally experienced or feel strongly for. Thank you for stopping by!

Sometimes we feel surrounded by mirrors, when people start faking emotions to match your own. When they don`t feel real or feel like all the joy is dying a man or a women's heart can reach a crashing point. When only words can match the souls of our people.

Very beautifully and somewhat courageously written piece
Well done!

To be wanted by me
I wouldn’t want you to worry
That You'd be drowned within my sea
I only wanted to be wonderful
And wonderful is true
In truth I only really wanted
To be wanted by you"

I am so happy your poem was picked for the spotlight. You presented the characters with the grasp of reality and featured them with the dignity and grace of a caring person.
