Down delta way, hip sway is an art
learned as the cradle rocks, and
babies watch mama and aunt-ies
Work it!
As with a jerk of the head, and hot
comb in hand, they create the
mood with much attitude
Check it;
Mama didn’t raise no fool...
"So that cool OG ain’t playin’ me
no more"...or at least...
no time soon
I ain’t got no room for a broken heart
got these babies to raise- and the
shared umhmm, brings a southern
comforting
Born of It’s been a long time coming
strumming on the radio; as a slow
movement sets in; molasses slow, one
born of past winds blowing and a
sure knowing
Across the floor, they start strolling,
setting the pace arm in arm; ain’t no
harm to dance away the blues
Everybody knows, or so the story goes
that down delta way; the "Amen" is in
the sway, of their glorious hips

Re: The Delta Sway
This is penned with a lot of energy and the kind of 'sway' that only you can bring through words! You show the moves and attitude in this and really made me smile in time with the melody of the words, and I couldn't help but feel more than a knowing wink behind the words - I think you know full well what kind of effect those swaying hips have on the guys! But, perhaps even more importantly, this isn't just about those kinds of delights, this feels like it's about dancing away the stress of the week and savouring the moment.
I feel like dancing now myself :)
I love all of your poetry, but this is one of those special ones.

Ah...my friend who is always on my side. I typically try to wait before answering but in this case I'm charging ahead because I know this one may be hard to grasp for a lot of people by it being cultural in nature and my culture seems to be so much different than what many relate to; nonetheless it is mine and thank you for sharing that. These hips are indeed magnificent and have much effect but this is the way they handled not only the stress of the week, but of life which isn't always easy.
Thank you again for being who you are. If you're in it with me, then I'm good. Much love Mick.

A bold tone in a seamless write! At least that's the way I see it!

Hey C2W,
I remember spending weeks walking slowly through the South,
trying to take in as much of the local sites as possible,
and the second biggest attraction was always that sway.
Excellent work here, excellent work indeed.

I knew I was going to enjoy this poem when I reached the point where it said "Work it!". This is laden with quirky energy and a unique attitude that I've not seen much of before - but I nonetheless like it. I've definitely heard "OG" somewhere before but its mgeaning eludes me; google's telling me that it is an "officer of the ground" but I don't that fits. This is a piece that I'm certainly going to read again.

Your response made me smile, I love it. For our purposes here OG stands for original ganster/slang for the smoother dudes in our culture. Thank you for the open attitude and the willingness to share. peace

Re: The Delta Sway
As a girl who really knows her way around the delta and can't get much more southern, this is one of those pieces I really felt right at home as I was reading it. I wonder is aunt-tee just a southern thing? You've planted the familiar images of the Sunday Baptist sevices swaying away to the ' can I get an Amen?' to those that have no idea about seafood on Fridays and sugar cane fields. You did the South proud on this one, it's got a great vibe and I loved it! Congratulations on the spotlight, it is well deserved!

Re: The Delta Sway
As your reader, I was transported with you into a small room with people who have known each other all their lives (there are no strangers here) and love is everywhere. I love the South, very deep in history and so much great music came from people who grew up listening to "The Delta Sway".. Congratulations on the Spotlight.

Hi there..
Oh the mood and tone of this piece brings it to life.I am not from the south, but can appreciate the cultural significances, and the fact that music brings the ladies a time to just be carefree. This is a honey of a spotlight choice and just rocks..Great writing..Tangie..

I love how this modernizes the American antiquity of the Delta Blues. Great stuff.

Re: The Delta Sway
What a pleasure it is to experience the Delta Sway alongside one of my favourite writers, not just at TPS, but in life itself. I really feel the attitude in this, in the kind of way which is easy to admire and hard to resist. I appreciated reading your response to my comment first time around, I checked it out at the time and it only made me admire the poem even more, so I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience the poem all over again, in the spotlight - right where it belongs!
An honour to be alongside you this week, peace :)
