When winter bows away to spring, I spy
Sweet blossoms' apology to season's barren side;
Letting the sharpness of its branches hide
In these fading fragrances so pleasing to the eye.
Yet how can such soft beauty belie
What seems the same disposition in which to bide,
And claim to spend its time, but lied;
Only to flutter away with a sorry sigh?
My mind encounters now the same verse
That on a time would delight, and-oh! inspire
The steps that echo so many beats too late.
And now no flowers to veil, nor room to rehearse;
Just emptiness where once was fire,
And no apologizes for this sorry state.
(I accidentally made all the first rhymes too similar- so sorry about that! :) )

Re: Bitter Searcher of a Lost Muse (Petrarchan sonnet)
A classical influence runs through the core of this poem. Admittedly, and admirably, it uses almost exclusively modern language, and conventional syntax, but there's something about it which makes me reminisce joyously on the poetry of many years ago. That's not taking anything away from the emotive content, it's only pleasure at seeing how you have represented that with natural imagery.
Well penned.
Well penned.

Your poem strangely really fits your avatar. The first 8 lines were tremendously beautiful. It gives me nostalgia of springtime so long ago. And with the sestet there comes sadness of reading something that once gave you joy cause it was your own creation. Now it doesn't mean the same cause you've lost the knack for writing.
Loved the olden style phrasing.... something I find very difficult to pull off.
Someday I'll write a Petrarchan sonnet, but haven't found the right words yet. I find the rhyme scheme much more difficult than the English.
Thanks for sharing RiverRose... truly a memorable write!

As Everhopeful said, your loyalty to accepted syntax is quite admirable. However, I feel this line breaks it slightly, and is all the more striking for it:
"Sweet blossoms' apology to season's barren side;"
"Sweet blossoms' apology to season's barren side;"

the choice of rhyme scheme a-b-b-a is just work of a genius in this , because it stretched the feeling and emotion that one gets reading the line , right upto the last line of verse ..... i was searching for a p.sonnet here , from a long time ..... and here it is ...
really stunning imagery .... first line is specimen of perfect descriptive poetry and personification ..

A truly indepth vision of a pure intensed heartfelt poem. The way you have with words are ever so beautifully written, as well as a sad look at life itself. An enjoyable beautiful P. Sonnet. RiverRose, I loved it. Keep 'em coming.

Re: Bitter Searcher of a Lost Muse (Petrarchan sonnet)
Elegance in verse RR, from the natural to the personal frames of reference, and the "first rhymes" needs no apology as it heralded the transition and gave a very distinctive feel to this piece - almost an elegy for what was lost, cheers!
