Keepin up and pushin on
Hang on for the ride and some fun
But in your heart
You know he isn’t the one
Won’t let him go
Always reachin for a hand to hold
Keep changing who you are
To hopefully finally fit in the mold
Each step you move ahead
And every decision you make
Just another on a long list
Of intentional mistakes
You take the ring
You wear the dress
You take his name
And your lifes already a mess
You have his baby
And add one more
Each day waiting
For him to show you the door
You sing while you fold
And smile while you sweep
Makin him lunch
And cryin in your sleep
You want an escape
But don’t want to leave
An unhealthy attachment
To a man you can’t keep
One day it’ll come
Crashing down
But you’ll feign happiness
At least for now
Keeping Up

Re: Keeping Up
I've said it before, I am a huge fan of your writing style Alicia! I love that gritty honest 'here it is' aspect to your poetry. Everything is out in the open an much of it is true, you don't sugar coat anything which I adore! Your style reminds me of something Janis Joplin would sing! Life in all it's glory, right? We can read about palaces and broken hearts all day, but to step into your real world is always a true pleasure! Very well done! Much enjoyed...

Re: Keeping Up
Nice flow and the sentiment is a familiar old one. I wish it never happened but I wouldn't undo it...dew

To me this stanza shows the pain that so many have felt....Bravo my friend.....Whisk

Re: Keeping Up
There is an interesting juxtaposition where the Narrator hangs on for the ride and fun, but N knows he's not the one. She won't let him go and holds his hand, changes herself, hoping to fit the mold. Obviously she wants to please him and worries he will tire of her and show her the door.
Most of the lines have two major beats and lines 2 and 4 tend to rhyme most of the time. That helped keep the momentum going.
I think we all know relationships that go through this stage. I've lived long enough to see a number of these relationships spark into meaningful partnerships. It is hard not to be responsive when one partner is smiling and being upbeat. If bitterness and anger take over that is a different story. I enjoyed your poem.
