There's a lot of fuss over High Romance -
Who did what with daring thighs
And ended up in a baron's manse;
Who made the vows he then recants
Because he never wanted ties -
All this ruckus over things
We'd do ourselves, but for rings;
All this bother over what
Writers wrote on their Sundays off.
I'd like to take romantic fiction
And blend it with romantic fact,
Then teach the course in dereliction
For which that blending gave me diction,
Plus the power to re-enact
Matter and anti-matter kissing
To softly adjectival hissing:
The real romance in lives is cancelled
By real romance that's only pencilled.
Who did what with daring thighs
And ended up in a baron's manse;
Who made the vows he then recants
Because he never wanted ties -
All this ruckus over things
We'd do ourselves, but for rings;
All this bother over what
Writers wrote on their Sundays off.
I'd like to take romantic fiction
And blend it with romantic fact,
Then teach the course in dereliction
For which that blending gave me diction,
Plus the power to re-enact

The real romance in lives is cancelled
By real romance that's only pencilled.

Re: Nothing Novel
I guess in real life Puccini never quite plays in our heads during a romantic kiss or
interlude but many times the blood rushes through our bodies like a symphony.
Anyway, NN has ascerbic witticism up the wazoo.. Very clever title indeed.
Happy 2013!

Re: Nothing Novel
*cough* ... 'All this bother over what/Writers wrote on their Sundays off.' - These two lines made me chuckle, partly because on my Sunday's off I'm guilty as charged of writing this 'High romance' stuff. Ha! I think this is a clever little piece here, and as noted above, the title is particularly effective. I love it when the title makes an effort towards the meaning or feel of a piece.
A great write! Truly!

To 'Lebo' - I appreciate your well-crafted response. 'acerbic witticism up the wazoo' - love it! And likewise to you - all the best for this year.

To 'ladylilith', Lily - always a pleasure and an honour(or 'honor'!) to receive your comments. I agree totally with your point about titles - as important, I think, as concluding lines - it's all about openings and conclusions (and what goes on in between, of course).

This moves along like a well oiled machine, and it's intelligently written. I admired your choice of words and I enjoyed the humour.

Re: Nothing Novel
A wonderful choice of language that gently pokes fun at what some people take so seriously. The term "Nothing sacred" went through my mind whilst reading this. Congratulations on your Spotlight!!

Re: Nothing Novel
Romance is very important. Yep.
But so is kissing and petting. You have to give them attention too.

It warms my heart when I recall the
warmth of passion spent--and to have
the power makes it all the better!
I am most grateful for this realm

to steer one's course.
Your lines carried power, mirth, merriment, and reflection. Good write!

Re: Nothing Novel
I love the comparison between the two stanzas, the historical sorta way, and the speaker's way, which is quite stunning, the latter, really it is a stellar read, especially those last two lines, that hold such a powerful message.
Congratulations on the deserved Spotlight!

Re: Nothing Novel
Every time I read this I can't help laughing. It's so clever and it's really funny. The language is mighty and there's some cool images in there, "matter and anti-matter kissing." Everything is just right.

Re: Nothing Novel
Yea, well crafted, smile twitching, thought provoking - what are those last two lines saying? Thanks.

Re: Nothing Novel
This is so clever, I found it to be a very witty and gentle satire of the poetic instinct to write what I believe is often titled 'purple prose'. Perhaps there's a nod toward some of the romantic 'classics' too, and all of the grandeur associated with the genre, but it's executed in a very elegant, yet completely down to earth, fashion. For me the ending suggested that a lot of real romance is ruined by expectations of some fairytale love story.
Congratulations on the spotlight.
