Definition of SONNETEER. 2: a minor or insignificant poet
merriam-webster.com
It’s as I thought, or had at least suspected,
my poems, all these steady beats I hear
are nothing, although lovingly created,
than the ramblings of a minor sonneteer.
‘Insignificant’ fits like a jacket;
homespun threads of woolly worthlessness
ingrained with failure. Shake it loose or hack it.
Who wouldn't love my wounded gentleness.
Besides when high on Countisbury Hill
the tinsel town of Lynemouth lost below;
all’s within my grasp, night clouds could spill
my verse on earth, as rare as summer snow.
Until tomorrow melts my voice again,
and dawn bleeds in its thin familiar vein.

Re: Ramblings of a minor Poet, sonnet
NO! Please tell me that is not the definition of a sonneteer on there! *declares war on merriam-webster*
You, and you alone, have enough poetic excellence to prove their definition wrong without needing to recite a list of names from the past. Even this poem on its own would do so, just look at how you've woven a narrative with sublime skill, mixing subtlety, imagery, a touch of wry self-depreciating humour, creative rhymes and plot twists. That is not the the work of any insignificant poet.
The turn in line nine is direct and, while quietly spoken, very forceful in defence of the sonneteer and the potential they hold in their eyes, hands and minds, before the couplet turns again. However, even though that image does speak of the words melting to nothing, I can also see it as potential for renewal, and the speaker holds the opportunity to spill her verse again.
If anyone needs me I'll be stocking up on weapons - this poem will be my cruise missile to launch at those psuedo-dictionary heathens!

Re: Ramblings of a minor Poet, sonnet
JAJ! The bards of this age and of the past will not stand for this insolence that is the definition of a Sonneteer given by Merriam Webster! And no, your words are not but mere ramblings of a minor Sonneteer! You write in the language of this age, and you are good at it. You are, and this poetic piece itself proves that you are not insignificant, and mind you, it has not only insulted you, it has insulted me as well.
Thrice is the fold of speech
For every piece ye preach,
Or whether twice again
In giving ye shall gain.
...And also in looking into my works.

Oh my Gosh!!
I'll bookmark this, and get back when I have the proper words, but for now it's oneof the best sonnets I've ever read! x
<Edit>
I just love everything single bit about this, and mind you, this is not a sonnet written by a sonneteer as it's in the definition (hm.. I don't like that definition at all, I think I'll join the war Mick declared).
The first stanza held such delicate phrasing and flow, and subtle change in meter, and there's something poignant about the second stanza, where the wording was so effective.
And the rest was simply sublime! The thought of summer snow (well the whole imagery to sum) at the ending and couplet is mind blowing.
I adore adore this, meadow! Thank you so so much for sharing it.

No chance brightside, i don't have the technical ability to effectively critique your work
but my heart tells me otherwise - you write from a deep,unique reservoir of specialness.
In my opinion you could even give longfellow a good run for his money

I think my lovely you are the living contradiction to that definition! Another stunning piece from you - whenever I see a piece of yours on here I cannot help but immediately click on it, never disappointed with the brilliance that is your writing - you have a mystery of language that I personally feel is almost unrivalled here, the final couplet was simply stunning. Your work could never be insignificant, I shall hunt those people down for daring to claim otherwise!

This is wistful and was very much enjoyed. A touch of sadness and a touch of humour mixed with thoughts and perceptions. Time will decide if our work is minor or not, best not to dwell and simply enjoy what we do.
Have you thought of recording an audio version of this or other sonnets? Jeremyf introduced me to a site called 'soundcloud' you should check it out. I'd love to hear you read one of your sonnets.

Wonderful stuff...I loved home's 'woolly worthlessness'...at once it gave the idea of insignificance a warm and cozy feel. If you are, then I want to be a sonneteer too! Congrats! - dew

Re: Ramblings of a minor Poet, sonnet
I could've sworn I commented on this, I know I read it because it's very familiar. You are definitely NOT a minor or insignificant poet and this poem proves it! It is rich w/ emotion, diction, concrete imagery. It's amazing. I love your work. Congrats on the spotlight.

Re: Ramblings of a minor Poet, sonnet
There is a lot of skill in this piece, much of it subtle and concealed beneath the surface. I particularly liked the view from the hill, how it gave the perspective of distance, both literally and figuratively.
You should have confidence in your work, it is good.

Re: Ramblings of a minor Poet, sonnet
I still hate that dictionary, I won't even refer to it by name any more. But, more importantly, I still love this poem, and I love it more than I hate their definition! Some people might take it as provocation to write something hate-filled, but you used the inspiration in such a personal way, really musing over their half-baked words, and proving them wrong with your lovingly created ones. Poetic justice in effect? All I know for sure is that you are an excellent writer and this is a wonderful poem, and they can stick their description on the not-so-bright-side!
Congratulations on the spotlight, sorry about my rant! :)

We all speak to the wind and the night, without reward or expectation, for that is what we do - and will continue to do so, for that is who we are inside. Inverted souls perhaps - wearing hearts upon our sleeves and deep emotions buried in abyssal anguish, cheers SongofMeadow and congrats!

This is fantastic meadow. Such a significant write. I love how powerful this feels even though the speaker must feel powerless as they write it. I love this. Congrats on your spotlight! I am honoured to share it with you. :)
