(Not) Sleeping with Stephen King
Post
by karrie » June 7th, 2013, 4:38 am
I cannot sleep,
he will not let me.
He beckons me
and I cannot resist,
he has me in his grasp,
he will not let go.
As I hold him
in my hands,
he is open and inviting
but between the covers
he terrifies me and
frightens me
to the point of exhaustion
and when I think
that I am finished
for the night
he reels me back in.
Another hour passes
and my eyes become heavy
to finally close
falling into nightmares,
he slips from my hands
to lay beside me.

Very clever Karrie. What a way to expand a metaphor:). The concept of having intimacy with the book you read is perfect. I remember Steven Kings It. Gave me the shivers. Don't like clowns any more:). Great work.

Ha! I can relate to this! It's like being in some strange and impossible relationship.. Literally not being able to put it down, page after page after page.. And then it's suddenly too late to go to sleep so you might as well keep on reading even though your eyes hurt and your back aches from sitting in that perfect reading position.. Lol. Really enjoyed this. Great stuff!

Great metaphor! You worked this one perfectly! I love his work, I have no false pretenses of being a 'Tale of Two Cities " girl. I cannot forget 'It' though and have written of his evilness and what he does to me. But "The Stand" is a damn good book and I was thinking of it the entire time I read this piece! This is a gem of a write. Loved it!

I agree Robin the stand is an excellent anticlimactic book and very engaging write, hey D you need to read the Stand by Stephen King much better than the book you mentioned. Karrie excellent metaphor for reading one of his books for a lady. I love his works though I a an Anne Rice fan even more so. Though I love Agatha Christie. Imagine if Christie lived in the computer age lol... what would here books read like.
enjoyable treat to read because of the outstanding imagery you painted.

What a great poem! I love Stephen King, and went through a phase of reading his books at night alone. Couldn't put it down and scared to keep reading. You took the words right out of my mouth, but said them much better than I could. This was GREAT! r.e. Kujo - think of it, one dog did that much mind control and damage, and it kept your eyes glued to the book. That man is a genius!

I'm not sure if his wife Tabitha has the same problems with Stevie.. but anyone who has attempted to lay down his book and turn off the lights I'm sure can relate.. Much enjoyed Karrie, Mr. King is my favorite.

This poem is exceedingly clever and kept parallel images going
for the entire piece. It is only through the title that the reader
is clued in to which is the true subject. Fantastic write.

I have read a few of his books but am not a King fan.
None the less you made this a facinating read. Much better than King.

Reading is definitely captivating. I know the feeling. Sigh. Silly books. Congrats on your spotlight! A very nice read.

Haha, this works so well, the subtle suggestiveness run parallel to the fear factor involved makes for a bedtime experience which saps the energy, yet keeps you going back for more! It shows you how talented a writer must be to scare us into nightmares, but have enough to keep us reading and re-reading.
This is a fun read for me as I think there's a lot of insight into the speaker, and the mentality of an avid reader, with a creative setting to highlight it.
Congratulations on the spotlight!

I was one of those kids who was terrified by The Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs, so I have a hard time understanding why the N would read a book that would give her nightmares. Congratulations on your poem's Spotlight Recognition and thanks for sharing.
