surprise suicide! thanks for the warning.

Post by generictruth » June 25th, 2013, 3:34 am

Here I stand a little girl,
With her heart out on more than just a sleeve,
I've ripped it out and gift wrapped it,
In a melancholic bow,
and it's still not good enough.

What do you want?
What do you want from me?
I've already told you I love you,
Already proclaimed from rooftops how beautiful you are everyday,
I've already kissed every scar on your ivory wrist,
And tried to make the pain go away.

So tell me,
why were you hiding in your room,
With the barrel of a shotgun aimed at yourself?
for five minutes you contemplate death,
And leave me in the dark until later that day.
I could have helped you.
I could have tried to kiss the scars on your wrist,
until every burden went away.

When we hope for perfection
we only see the pain
when we pray for light
there's only rain

I sensed a great deal of anger in this piece, which is a reaction that I can relate to in this sort of situation. The pain of this is in the guilt the speaker feels, what could've should've been. But it's also in the fact that this person didn't confide in the speaker. That in itself feels like a kind of betrayal. This was a fiery yet moving write with a great deal of momentum. Thank you for sharing it. Well-penned.

Bay

This was a very painful read for me. I have attempted suicide before with a knife so this write really resonates with me. I feel like dew covered mostly what I was going to say here. I was going to start my written response to you with the exact first line sentence dew responded to you with exactly the same way till I read his post. This is a rough situation and very sticky. This is a powerful anthem. Took guts to share this piece I feel.

Hey Gen,

Sometimes people don't want help, they feel there is no help, I have two theories there is the attempted suicide that gets everyone's attention and it is a huge cry for help and needs to be addressed. Then there are the one's that are serious. They tell no one. They don't take a bottle of pills and drink a fifth at home only to be found to have their stomach pumped hours later. The serious ones, walk off quietly making sure everything has been taking care of and that this will be the end. My sister did both, and now of course she's gone, she made sure of that. Like you say in this piece, 'surprise! thanks for the warning' A mature write, your poetry still amazes me, you are always spot on and your work is always such a pleasure to read! Take care girl!

I have to say this is a nightmare situation. There are enough of them around in my area, and it always shakes me to the core.Your poem was compelling because of the close relationship the two of you had.Well done..very tragic..Tangie..

Wow, this was such a dark, gripping read with such an understated sense of resignation and regret! This definitely sounds organic, like it was coming from a real experience. Well done!

Hey there,

I guess this is the first time I read something from you, and I'm glad to read this under the Spotlight!
This is really hard-hitting; where the speaker is trying to help, support, love, take care of them till the very end, but it didn't work out. I love the simple delivery that had such a great impact- simplicity and effectiveness were a striking blend in this, and all started from the title till that ending line.
Well done! and Congratulations on your Spotlight!

Sash

As I finished your poem I thought about how suicide leaves such deep wounds in all those left behind. You have done an excellent job of portraying the anguish, the wrestling with the "what-ifs", the emotional baggage that springs from the event. Very well done and congratulations on the spotlight!

Bay said that she sensed anger in this piece, but I disagree. What I felt from this piece was different than anger, it was of frustration, and feeling bitter and betrayed. I heard somewhere that those who are heartless once cared too much, and I guess that ties in here somewhere. I certainly have many strong emotional ties concerning depression and attempting suicide. Very well done, I have fallen in love with this piece.

There comes a time when this course of action seems like the only answer,as many of us have experienced. I think you handled this issue very well and deserve the Spotlight for your openess and honesty. Thank you for sharing,
