Double Standards

Why is it opinion if you hate someone for their sexual preference
But prejudice if you hate someone for their race?
How could one be right and the other wrong
Why do you think of a man hitting a woman when you hear abusive relationship?
Why are some things not allowed because of religion when our government says that laws are not made to abide religion?
How can people possibly expect the world to make sense when there are so many double standards?

Why can't we just look at people as people?
Let's just forget about gender
Or race
Or sexual preference
And look at the person inside
This may sound a bit ironic
But why can't people just hate each other for who they are
Not what they are?

Good ending there, totally unexpected but made a real impact to go along with the first part. "But why can't people just hate each other for who they are, Not what they are" is another way to look at hate.

Your poem made me wonder how important my gender, race, and sexual preferences are to me and if I would want others to disregard their role in establishing my identity. Certainly, I hope someone would not hate me for being who I am. Hopefully, I would not hate others for who they are and I would treat others the way I would like to be treated. Your poem offers lots of room for thought. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on the TPS Spotlight.
