Candlelight at Candlemass
Post
by cariusal » May 10th, 2012, 12:24 pm
Candlelight at Candlemass
Shadows shrink the room
We share togetherness
In a halo of candlelight
Enclosed in our fireside world
Soft light from the flickering flame
Touches your cheek with rose
As the old dog belly crawls closer
Completing the intimate circle
We gaze into the fire pictures
A sombre landscape of embers
Blackened outcrops, grey ash plains
Lava glow under the fracture cracks
Wood smoke tugs the senses
Plucks the strings of memory
Children again in a long ago home
Wrapped tight in warmth and love
The candle dies in a wax waterfall
I reach for you, hold you close
The dancing shadows join the embrace
As raindrops beat on the window lattice

You have invested a lot into the scene-setting descriptions of this one, and it works very well while still retaining enough of what really makes the scene so special, the couple who create the shadows and are highlighted in the candle's glow. There is a little bit of a melancholic edge in the third stanza, but I like how you've used that turn in order to show love underpins and holds everything together.

You stretch a small moment into a picturesque magnificence. Each and every line has a sensuous touch to it .. amber , rainbow drops etc are just out of this world ...... a well deserved spotlight ...

Thank so much for your kind comments on this little poem.
It happens to be based on a real event and is one of the very few personal poems I write. We were lucky to buy a country cottage soon after we were married (they are much sought after now and way out of our price range today).
The interior is usually stripped out and subjected to a massive makeover but we decided against doing that and have kept as much of the originality that is possible for today’s modern living.
Candlemass is a lesser known holy day on February 2nd and my wife suggested that we spent it by candlelight as it was celebrated many years ago, so this poem relates to that evening.
Thank you all once again.
Cari.
