The Old Man's Return

The last misty grey morning before the rain leaves us behind
Dampened screen porch covered in whispers of fall neglect
The signs of that old man's return, we embrace with pride in the presence of strangers
But he is not fooled by our folly
He listens late at night as the locals curse to each other under their icy breath
And his vengeance is swift, unruly and unpredictable, as his father of the north
Lay waste to this land till the blessed men waver
And the legends, my son, will live on forever, As they always have
There is no pride as strong as your own, as we are eternal
And they are but only mortals

I feel that this piece is an allegory for something. Perhaps the weather or seasons? I say this because I am instantly struck with impressions of nature. Great use of language here. Well done! much enjoyed.

Definite multiple interpretations here. I read it first as a changing of the seasons and a return of Old Man Winter. But it could certainly mean other things too. A vicious traveler, a curse, a horde of invading locusts, anything cyclical that is anticipated with dread. The strength of this piece is in the resolution of the dread as it transcends fear through realized immortality.

I thought this at first to be a seasonal piece and then later changed my mind to conform with something more in keeping with the return of Odysseus; but on a Nordic panorama perhaps. Well done LLD and congrats on the Spotlight!

As others have said this is an intriguing poem, it makes me wonder where it was originally posted- sadness, nature, enlightenment or even roots but I do think the not knowing is part of the poems success. Deserving of more than one read through, well done, mx

The piece invokes the interpretative imagination and makes my mind crave logical closure.

I am intrigued and admire the masculine forceful tone of the words.

I see a discourse between mythical gods watching the land below and admiring one of the old mortals who can sense the gods above. And the right of passage of a noble ruler. And ... have to read it again.
