Weekly Challenge Topic Suggestions

Post by Chelle » May 19th, 2012, 1:03 am

Please place your suggestions for the weekly challenge here as a reply to this thread. Don't feel offended if it takes awhile to use your suggestion. We cycle through them every so often and we also save some for National Poetry Month challenges.

What is love?
-----------------------
how about a theme-free challenge that is form-centric...but not classical. Perhaps challenge members to write any poem, but adhere to an invented form...like a specific meter (^/^^/^^/^/) or a specific rhyme (abbc bccd cdda) or maybe both. I know poetry is more than rhyme and meter, but roots is roots (?) - Thanks staff! - Dew

Just a few suggestions for topics for the Weekly Challenge:

• If you were a machine, what kind of machine would you be? Describe your functions and explain why you are ideally suited to fill this role.

• You are an ocean, timeless and boundless, sheltering myriad life forms within your waters. But now, in the time of global warming, your waters are drying up. Write a song describing how you feel about this.

My suggestion for a topic, a poem concerning historical epic poets and their work such as Dante, Homer or whoever one desires to write about.

Thrice is the fold of speech
For every piece ye preach,
Or whether twice again
In giving ye shall gain.

...And also in looking into my works.

Something that pushes the boundaries of structure -- say, with spacing, line breaks, color (cringe), etc., but does so in a way that makes sense to the reader. So the challenge is to convey meaning with structure. And the topic should be simple. Why do you write poetry? Something that gives the writers freedom to experiment.

Aren't Sylvia Plath's journals set to unsealed in February 2013?

Would seem a fitting time to create a Weekly Challenge themed around Plath in someway:

- A poem that the journals might contain
- a poem inspired by one of hers (Mad Girl's Love Song)
- a poem about Plath herself

Anyways - just a thought.

Have a challenge that deals with Satan's fall from Heaven.

Hello!

You must write with only one subject, which is a lifeless object that is determined by the challenge, the same lifeless object for everyone.

Write a prose piece the length of an average poem and encrypt the most disturbing prose or poetry in it that you can possibly come up with.

Write a poem (on anything you like) but with references to the TV show, "Breaking Bad."

Perhaps our take on the supernatural- be it a real presence or merely a metaphor to epitomize the poet's message? That way we all have freedom to choose technically what we want to write on, but challenges us to mould those discussions into a certain structure. I think we'd find a lot of variety from the submissions.
