The 3D Printer

Post by 3M2R » January 6th, 2014, 2:02 pm

The 3D Printer

Patiently molding, layer by layer,
As plastic melts and hardens again--
First weak and fragile, then almost unbreakable.

Beautiful art once only imagined
Now realised: in sight and touch--
So true, so believable, so real.

A form on screen to a model in existence:
A simple click away, but quiet hours watching them form--
Just a little more endurance,
A little less frustrations.

A/N: this is dedicated to my dearest friend who is facing a difficult time in her life.

My demons coo in darkness and light: I am my darker self, my anti-self.

We take the simplest things and what we create is beyond what we imagine. A beautiful and poignant OM.

Your note, dedicating this to a friend, really helped me to see this in a different light. 3D printers intrigue me, it seems like such a futuristic thing to me that I have a natural sense of awe for them, but to then see it as an extended metaphor for someone, and how they can grow strong from the most fragile beginnings, makes for a really clever way of illustrating potential to someone.
Excellent OM!

I just love your choice of words making many lines stand out on their own, and like 'hopeful, the note at the end derives a different perspective, and I love the analogy you created here, I'm sure it takes a lot of work and struggle to finally have the desired result at the end, but it's worth and it's beautiful and real, indeed, it takes a little bit of endurance, patience, time, and dedication like most stuff in real life.
Striking OM!

Thanks all of you for swinging by!

@Mick: you got it spot on :D I thought the printer highlighted how we needed patience and less grudges against whatever we presume is the cause for our unhappiness or frustrations. We can't avoid frustrating situations, but we can always reduce their impact on us. Instead, we should look at the beautiful product form in quiet. Grow strong from a once fragile person due to adversity is the best gift life can give: you feel everything that life can give.

This is a cool piece, Dreamer. I had to read it once I saw the title, as I can't help drooling over those things. Like Mick, I consider them so very futuristic; I can't believe they exist! Anyway, your poem was pretty intriguing being read in a more straightforward way as well, although the love is so palpable in your words, I think the reader immediately knows there's something more to the poem. I love when metaphors are executed so well like that. I think it's cool too, just the fact that you thought to use something currently so unfamiliar to the world this way. I like the concept of layering here, and the way that connects to a back-and-forth between exhibiting weakness and strength. You did a good job of conveying the necessity of patience for endurance in the final stanza. Cool stuff. Really nicely done!

Thanks Raven, grateful for your visit and comment! You have really humbled me with your praises. Well I was myself surprised and thoroughly intrigued when I visited the 3D printing shop and watched how all the objects form from scratch!

Proof positive that a great extended metaphor or analogy can make a relatively short poem take on so much depth, it really is an unusual one to choose, yet it works perfectly. I hope that you showed it to your friend and inspired her with your words!
Congratulations on the spotlight!

I've found most people in general, don't understand writers, and how, or where, they get their inspiration. It comes from nowhere, and everywhere, as you have so aptly showed in your poem. Only a poet could take something materialistic, and make it come alive, just by putting pen to paper. Really good work!

A good and well deserved spotlight, open mic at its most excellent here. I love that your are saying one thing but meaning another, the metaphor feels so natural here it makes the reader doubt and re-read, very good mx

thanks everyone for the wonderful comments.
I was truly surprised that any of my writes could even be on the din's list, much less be featured as a spotlight.

Really grateful for this spotlight.

Great use of extended metaphor in this one. I love the idea of something being molded and becoming strong, and how we must wait for the fragility to pass and to become strong again. I've never seen a poem that made use of a 3D printer as it's central metaphor, so I'm glad I happened upon this one. Clever idea with a great message. Congrats on the spotlight!

Almost feeling a creation in the works, perhaps a sonogram inside the womb, presaging the birth, and then all the attendant needs of a newborn; knowing life will never be quite the same. But I'm probably out in left field 3M2R; nevertheless welcome to the Spotlight and cheers!
