I hear your voice
In the silent early morning hour
You call me from a place so far away
Carried on a misty breeze
And tender autumn showers
You usher light into my solitary day
I hear your voice
In the dungeons of my yielding heart
You sprinkle your rhythm onto my blues
Sent over happy beats
Milliseconds apart
Echo is only sweet when it is bouncing off of you
Sing your whispers into my core
So I can waltz into forevermore
Music and magic astride your breath
Together we shall overcome your death
In the silent early morning hour
You call me from a place so far away
Carried on a misty breeze
And tender autumn showers
You usher light into my solitary day
I hear your voice
In the dungeons of my yielding heart
You sprinkle your rhythm onto my blues
Sent over happy beats
Milliseconds apart
Echo is only sweet when it is bouncing off of you
Sing your whispers into my core
So I can waltz into forevermore
Music and magic astride your breath
Together we shall overcome your death

This is a beautiful piece, steeped in sadness. Like a bittersweet memory.

Re: We Shall Overcome
At first I liked it but was somewhat lost. Then got to the end and was hit hard by it. Had to read it again and everything was in place. It hurt to re-read knowing the ending. Thank you for posting this

Re: We Shall Overcome
I always appreciate poetry like this, the kind which is undeniably sad, even tragic in nature, yet still speaks in a way which celebrates someone's life. Knowing they have left enough of their spirit behind in someone's heart speaks volumes about them as a person, and if they can still inspire them then there is no finer tribute to their life, even though their loss will be forever mourned.
A well composed poem, with a subtle form and hard-hitting content.

Re: We Shall Overcome
This is as if you looked into MY heart and knew what I was thinking and feeling. One year after the loss of my beloved husband, my thoughts and feelings are revealed here in your creation. I do miss him so much! Your last two lines are the core of this write. Thank-you for reminding me, my friend.

Re: We Shall Overcome
I like the way this implies that strength can still be drawn from someone who has passed on. It's sad, but comforting at the same time.

Coming to think of it, there is no other way but to draw strength. Otherwise...

Re: We Shall Overcome
powerful ending! how can someone help you that isn't here? because the love they gave lasts and lasts in unexpected ways...only you can live your life, but even lost love can catalyze a waning spirit. Congrats on the spotlight! Well done! Sometimes when we're drained, its good to lean back and soak what we can from a giving environment. I love TPS for that. peace - dew

Re: We Shall Overcome
I like the way you compressed so much into so few lines. Every word seems significant. I thought I was reading a nice love poem and then it turned into a tragic love poem. I love that it fell off the table, so to speak. I was really surprised and pleased by that. I also feel the pace of the poem is well suited to its content.
Great work!

I like the way you dealt with this topic. Memories like this ease the pain of loss, somewhat. Well worded and formed. Congratulations on the Spotlight and Thank you for sharing this,

this poem is such a huge gift to all our hearts!...and for me it is no less so...
I have probably spent more time thinking on this subject than on any other one in my lifetime, and have finally decided, after many years and many funerals of people I love, that death is a lie...
perhaps one of the greatest struggles we have as human beings is learning to realize that, learning to know it in the deepest, most secret places of our beings...
for what are we when we are absent from our bodies?
what were we before we were present in our bodies?
what are we now?
each of us truly needs to find for him/herself the answers to those three questions...
and speaking for my own self alone, I am sensing myself slowly growing to understand that the "I" that I am, whether inside or outside a physical body, is forever alive...

Re: We Shall Overcome
Balustrade.......this truly did make me tear up. But it also had a soothing effect, and that seems odd and strange given the content, but it was almost a whisper of promise, that passion is never completely lost, just slipped away into a crevice or a dark smudged corner, and with enough faith and hope, it will surface, albeit briefly, it will surface and reassure you that once .........you had it all. Excellent and congratulations on the Spotlight. I am very envious of this wonderful piece.

Re: We Shall Overcome
I have often looked back and wondered.. what happened? Where did life go wrong, or was it me/us? How could I have been so stupid to sacrifice all for nothing? And now, when it is too late, I can only grieve and lament, and try to draw strength and inspiration. It shouldn't have been this way.

Re: We Shall Overcome
I thank everyone for the considerate comments and immense support. Loss can never be obliterated nor fully accepted. Yet, there are ways of retaining the sweet part of the memories and partly locking out the bad ones.
