Yes, and I do too

Post by inthesemoments » February 22nd, 2015, 12:32 am

When you tell a girl you love her
And she says, “yes, and I do too,”
Let your lungs loose and let them scatter
What she means to you to the world.
Take her to the mountaintop
Where you can’t breathe,
And hear the echoing of your voice.
Remember that feeling
Because breathless is how you should feel.
Hear yourself say you love her again,
Again, and again
That you may never forget that you do,
And that perhaps she may not too.
But on that mountaintop as you bellow
Don’t forget to take her hand
Because you might lose her in the clouds.
Heaven is a tough place to find angels,
And the clouds can make you forget
That one can fall.
Should you lose her or should you fall
You will be breathless again.
You will hear again,
Again and again, “I love you.”
Again and again, “Yes, and I do too.”
Yet you know this is not true anymore,
That you are gone from the mountaintop
Just hearing echoes of what it felt like
Up there in heaven.

Welcome to TPS and I really enjoyed the treatment you gave to a timeless topic - "First cut is the deepest" (Cheryl Crowe). I had some initial confusion with the reply; thinking a possible satire was in the works, but that was my own over-complication of a delightful piece that everyone should read and remember (young and old alike). Much wisdom here, especially our tendency to sometimes over work the meaning of love maybe - cheers ITM! - Dan

There is a double-sided sword in the room that no one wants to think about. Often, especially with very young love, the tendency to reply "I do too" is mouth service. And then again, there is a tendency, once Love is found and acknowledged, to sometimes let it slip away by not working to keep it alive. So one must never forget, be true with your words and your emotions, be careful with someone else's heart, but when Love is in your world, never take it for granted or let it wither through inattentiveness. Good write, thank you for sharing it.

Welcome to TPS, what a way to make your mark! Such a powerful poem. I loved the imagery. Everything was so well put together, the repetition served a purpose and was well executed. Great poem. Congrats on the spotlight. :)

"I love you" is a hard thing. This really exhibited that well. Good work with this– congrats on your spotlight!

Welcome to TPS!
Sometimes it's easy to become very cynical as a writer, even as a person, so it's refreshing to read a poem which is such a joyous celebration - and it's in tribute to something worth celebrating too!
You've written this with infectious enthusiasm and a style which, while it could certainly have personal and private relevance, is still engaging to the neutral reader, allowing them to place themselves into the poem.
Congratulations on the spotlight!

Thank you to all of you for the welcome. This poem of mine derives a lot from real life. I appreciate you are all with me even just through the pen and through TPS of course :)

Such a nice poem. If only we could always hang on to the feeling of that first "I love you" to always rediscover the magic and never be disillusioned... you beautifully captured the feeling a very deserving poem!

You found my poem haha I'm particularly proud of this one. This is the first real one I've written in 4 years. I wrote this right after she told me that she can't love me anymore. I wrote this coming out of a dark and dramatic time. We can't preserve first loves, but new loves are firsts in their own ways anwyway
