A Day in Cornwall

Post by Stepshed » March 23rd, 2015, 1:57 pm

On a wood bridge near the sea,
the first fine layers of a day are laid by the sighting
of a young lizard
melting warm into the morning
like the first word of a sacred song.

Sandymouth Beach belongs here.

We walk the soft sands leaving our prints to follow
behind. We explore rock-pools teeming
with emptiness. A tiny fishling startles itself
then hides from view. We examine clusters of dark shells
clinging as shanty-towns,
to rock.

A chilled breeze
skilfully ripples the water. A day well lived tires easy.

Later, as we walk the cliff to Northcott Mouth,
the day’s edge sharpens our fatigue.
A burial mound creeps up on us, we stop
to bury the dead, again.

We return, written deep into the day. And then we watch night
seep through
like ink,
onto the next page.

I really like this one and I've been to Sandymouth beach..

These lines are really lovely and really well done in particular.. they brought to mind those long summer evenings that I spent relaxed on the sand-dunes, watching the sun gently creep away..
We return, written deep into the day. And then we watch night
seep through
like ink,
onto the next page

Sorrows woven
heart worn..
sing of sadness
until hope brings Dawn..

"we watch night
seep through
like ink,
onto the next page."

Loved that line...apparently bb did too! heh...some poems end with abrupt closure, others like yours almost seem to begin again like you could start over at the top and fill in a new day in all the uninked spaces. - dew

What a magnificent write! The imagery is striking and I felt as if I were there. The last few lines I especially like. Much enjoyed reading this!

I enjoyed the idea of walking through the layers of a day and spotting a young lizard
melting warm into the morning. The ending holds the promise of more to come:
We return, written deep into the day. And then we watch night
seep through
like ink,
onto the next page.

Congratulations the TPS Spotlight recognition.
Jo

Congratulations for being chosen for the spotlight! Yours is a delightful poem. I walked the beach with you and enjoyed the day.

'A tiny fishling startles itself
then hides from view.' a lovely image!

Stunning. I actually live in Cornwall and you have captured its essence perfectly. I am cursed in that I take it for granted; you are not - the beauty and magic still lives in you, and it shows.
