If Keats and Seuss Could Share a Beer (villanelle)

Post by Philip16 » October 1st, 2014, 8:28 pm

If Keats and Seuss could share a beer
Perched along trans-Jordan stream
Would Burns and Shelley stand and cheer?

Green eggs and ham and urn austere
Might vie for conversation's theme
If Keats and Seuss could share a beer.

Would truth and beauty, sans veneer,
In red and white with stripes be seen,
Would Burns and Shelley stand and cheer?

Bright topper 'bove a feline sneer
Might quicken frozen sylvan scene
If Keats and Seuss could share a beer

Then laughing at their mixed careers
Place bets on how the shades might lean:
Would Burns and Shelley stand and cheer?

When fluted Time, transcending years,
Gathers, mixes star-crossed teams,
If Keats and Seuss could share a beer
Would Burns and Shelley stand and cheer?

I think they must! LOL...great concept! another TPSer wrote one about Suess and Poe...it was awesome...like yours! A most pleasing villanelle! The repetitions served well as flagstop reminders that 'hey, this is just a what-if y'all!'. Had a great affect on my reception - dew

Philip - this was classically clever in both inception and execution. Sadly, I'm lacking when it comes to the classics but recognized the "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "The Cat in the Hat" in your masterful understatement. I thought I got a whiff of Yeats along the way, and Jamaica has a red and white stripe beer. Lots to enjoy here and always a pleasure, cheers! - Dan
