- The wind at night
asks the questions
the darkness always
looks pregnant with
What is born and pushed into the light?
Signposts, I suppose
announcing we are getting closer
Smell the breath of death -
does time make it less putrid?
I catch whiffs of a
light seedling’s agony -
a sweet cry before dawn
and within every composting husk of every body
I imagine a whole forest reaches out
to so many still-sleeping
gardeners . . .

Drew,
Rich and haunting. A mournful, vulnerable, wistful mood with an important pinch of hope there at the end. Well done!

Re: Signposts
USM already said "haunting" Drew so I'll choose another adjective or two to describe this veiled, metaphorical commentary that functions on several levels: the current state of the world, the immediate status quo that we know (courtesy of the media), and a personal and philosophical one.
It's a jungle out there and getting worse; while we were all born to die, with a healthy dose of raging hormones and procreation thrown into the fearful and fateful mixture. What will we "leave" for the children? Cheers! - Dan

Re: Signposts
I suppose many of us still sleep the sleep of the unaware while the forest of darkness creeps nearer. I doubt that those who rest in their blissful ignorance (a majority) will awaken before the eleventh hour. Even those of us that have read the signpost are bound to be caught up in the approaching calamity. A sobering, bone-chilling write, Mango.

Re: Signposts
Wonderful theme!
Decidedly unique and cleverly sculpted poem that takes the reader unawares into realms not normally traversed! I really enjoyed this one, thank you!

Signposts we would rather be blissfully unaware of...
I read a bumper sticker once that said:
2 things you can be certain of in life - death + taxes...
Good spotlight choice

Love the trail off at the end. Little whimsical, but also shows that there's so much more to explore. Congrats on your spotlight!

Re: Signposts
Hey Dog!. Congratulations on the spotlight piece. Great poem here. I really liked the pregnant/light/dark concept that you gave us. Keep on writing dude, that is all that I can say. Thanks for posting.

Re: Signposts
Darkness or the unknown always looks pregnant
with questions. The wind is like a gossip
asking the questions that darkness conceals like 'What is born and
pushed into the light?'
Narrator reveals the answer is probably 'signposts'.
announcing we are getting closer. The poem keeps the
reader's attention by turning attention from life to death, and
poses more questions. Congratulations on the TPS recognition.
