"My God is a Cereal Box"

Post by blueinferno07 » April 26th, 2014, 3:08 pm

Mortals are angels with amnesia waiting to remember enough to find their way home...

I am a child of a forgotten time
trapped and pressed into a borrowed soul.
Soaked in placenta,
spilling ancestral memory,
raised on a diet of self loathing, faith, and fear

My God is a cereal box,
filled with eight essential vitamins and minerals,
part of this complete breakfast.
On the side of the box, a fun little maze is printed.
It spirals in gold and spins toward eternity.

I am nothing but what you see,
black and white, stepping, floating,
spiritual status quo,
a tongue of flame flickering fiercely
here atop the pyre of my heart.

I burn monochrome,
grey as storm clouds,
looking out over a world drowned in rainbow lights,
yearning for my moment to cross over,
step beyond the barrier into bright neon lights.

My God is a cereal box,
my faith the milk I drown him in.
He starts solid,
yet I leave him far too long and he grows soggy,
disintegrating, disappearing.
He is more soup than cereal when I taste him.

What I see is not there,
my senses betray.
After a short breakfast,
my faith purges my God.
I flush him away.

My devil is a pack of cigarettes.
He will sustain me until lunch

Wow interesting take on this piece. I never thought of thinking like that.

hello,

an interesting take on life...my favorite lines are:

What I see is not there,
my senses betray.
After a short breakfast,
my faith purges my God.
I flush him away.

My devil is a pack of cigarettes.
He will sustain me until lunch

always, Cat

To me the idea is that your God is life and the devil (cigarettes) kills that life.
A nice piece about the travelings from God and faith.

I love the ritualistic implications of this. Take your daily vitamins, rote and mundane.

This stanza is so so relatable to literally anyone who has eated cereal. This is such a strong analogy.

I love this idea... God as the food that the speaker finds flawed, and depending on the devil to get him through until the next meal.

Wonderfully, wonderfully done. This is my favorite poem that I've read on TPS lately. Lovely metaphor, wonderfully written. I've bookmarked it!

Quite a personal write loaded with that sort of philosophy that makes the reader nod in acceptance even though he may not fully subscribe to it. Again I am not sure I make sense, but I see the writer in full realization of his situation and going along with a transition from something that once gave him strength to something wrong but promising more vindication despite the self loathing. Quite some powerful words here, and very notable too.

Gotta have those 8 essential vitamins and minerals BI! The extended metaphor was a clever way to elaborate on an all-powerful entity, perhaps beyond a logical quantification, yet you managed to pin him down with some fine imagery and smiling simile, cheers!

Beautifully written, the imagery, the feeling that flows throughout from childhood to the soggy cereal; forever doubt. Very good reading, thanks. Loretta

Lol, interesting view as the relevance holds true. Loved the closing line with the pack of cigs as your devil holding you over until lunch. Waiting to see what aspect lunch holds over you in relation to your life. Congrats on the spotlight!

What an interesting metaphor! Really enjoyed thinking this over. I loved the final, blunt comparison made between the nourishing breakfast and the tempting cigarette. Very nicely done, much appreciated
