Oregon Whaler

Post by Madflyer » March 9th, 2016, 2:50 pm

I walked to the shore and sat on jetted rocks
As salted mist then touch my lips at once
The waves could almost take me under and let me out for air again
The though of how vast the sea must be, that held me there lost in time or memory
For what secrets are held within its abyss

I go back in time to the days of whaling
A whaler's life, as he might sit in his skiff and gaze at the shore
Did he wonder what lives beyond these breaking sea's or what it might have in store
The vastness of this distance shore
Or did he ever wish to leave his ship of dreams

The days of whaling died
He leaves to shore to look back no more
The trees that sway and grass that waves to him
Come stay with me it calls
With one last look to sea does he say his goodbyes

Not long on words but just a smile
He thanks the life he lived awhile
Into the sunrise and its morning glow
His ship of dreams now sailed away
Could mine have been the same how would I ever know

The ending stanza is great, it wraps things up perfectly...
it has the feel good factor ( a sense of contentment)...
thoughtful, nostalgic piece - nice.

A great sense of nostalgia and atmosphere to this poem. A bit of history to draw one back in time. I liked the thoughtful quality lent by the first section and then how everything seemed to cycle around to a place of contemplation. The final question tugs a little, when the speaker seems so enraptured by a past life but has no way of knowing how he would fit there. Great work.

Madflyer:

I could almost feel the sea spray and taste the salty air. I really enjoyed this splendid piece. The life and times of the whaler must have been a dangerous and exciting adventure. Thank you for a surreal tale.

Blessings
