A Viking Saga Pt.2 A Viking Funeral

Post by chairmanyang » October 31st, 2015, 11:37 am

The Closing of a 2 part Poem in my A Viking Saga series, A dedication to my ancestors.

A Viking Funeral

At the edge of the snow covered tree line we stand
brothers in life and death
across the clearing from us they gather
they howl and roar and hammer there axes against their shields
like wolves about to attack we bear our teeth
and with a single cry we surge forward
in a sea of sweat and dirt stained flesh
charging down the hill they come at us
10,000 strong a barbaric wave of bloodlust
and in the middle of that snow covered glade
we meet and our axes cleave apart their flesh
heads roll though the snow and crimson blood
paints the pure white snow a sickening red
this orgy of fury and blood will last for hours
and at its conclusion the victors will stand triumphant
While the victims will never know of there loss
for they have gone to the feasting halls of the all father
for them the battle is over and has only just begun.

Let the sky welcome you, for therein dwells the Emperor and his saints.

i always loved the traditional sea burials myself. the burning boats were a fitting send off. still most of the old vikings were actually farmers since food was precious in that harsh environment. the growing season was quite short.

Thank you for commenting Chelle. To fall in glorious battle, to ascend with the Valkyries and sit at the tables of the all father's feasting hall in Valhalla these are the things a warrior of the north lived for.

I enjoy the sense of eternal continuation in the final line. Vivid in its depiction of violence and fittingly ambiguous its conclusion.

Thanks much for sharing,
Mirthy :lovey:

Thanks for reading Mirthy. I am a big fan of epic battles from history, I wanted to capture that violence and wild savagery found in those battles. I'm glad you enjoyed reading.

I enjoyed both parts. The viking battles were horrific for the men and warriors, It was a difficult life. I would not have liked to live in that era. To be a woman in those days must have been a hard life as well.
I love your style of writing. Thanks for sharing.

Blessings
