Brave new world ( Archaic Type) (IK)

Post by jainrohit » October 7th, 2015, 10:52 pm

Brave new world ! what is so new in thee
The claims that thou boast; inscribe in gold
Art powered by genes that are years old
Thou varieth not to any degree

Brave new world ! What is so brave in thee
Power in few hands; keep controlling
Mistakes of past; you keep on rolling
Thine own mistakes; Thou cannot foresee

Brave new world ! What's so worldly in thee
Loneliness, Hatred thou failed to slay
Thine confines are shrinking day by day
Do thee deserve to be called worldly ??

Thou art same ! How Can thee be called new
Of the glorious part; Thou art residue.

- Rohit Jain

Thee , thou, thine - variations of you, your, yours

Art - Old English for are

verbs might have ended with -eth but that'd have dampened the reading experience....

The archaic language reinforces the overall message of this wonderfully written IK poem. I love a strong ending couplet, and yours is great!

Thanks TripleP.

The use of archaic words was intentional. Thanks for your good words........

An absolutely wonderful sonnet JR that put me in mind of "Ozymandias", but with more of a social commentary on the cyclical nature of our follies through time in "...this, the best of all possible worlds" (Candide). Some things never change and this was cleverly done to great effect - cheers! - Dan
Loved the titular nod to Aldous H. too!

The more things change, the more they stay the same! I like seeing some cynicism in poetry, especially when it's delivered as a knock-out blow at the end of a poem. For all of the optimism in the opening of each stanza, the eventual sense of dejection that the 'brave new world' isn't all one would hope is definitely something I can relate to!
A very cutting closing couplet sealed the deal nicely here.

I liked the 'thees and thous' in the movie 'Friendly Persuasion', but I think your poem would be a plus even without the archaic language. Thinking about the 'now' as residue was a clever way to end. Whether a person is attacked by lions in an arena or hacked to death by terrorists in a bakery/restaurant, evil remains evil today as well as yesterday, but I guess we have to keep trying to be a part of a brave new world and believe that our faith in the 'good' will prevail in our hope for tomorrow.
