SYMPHONY:

Have darkness cloak us, feed us with fear
At the passing of each moment, of the withering of each year
Anoint our troubled brows, with the complexity of thought
And have disregard for all the sins, we have birthed and we have wrought

Blind our eyes to truth, so that we may never see
What it is we need to do, who it is we need to be
Deliver unto us only words, that given time will grow
Creating in us knowledge, and all the things we need to know

Let my eyes light upon the light, and yes the dark
And a future that is bountiful, but contentment it is stark
Do not seek to tempt me, for in time you will grow to see
That both good and evil, reside side by side in me

And so then to darkness, from whence I came
and come the hour, I will return again
Within its folds safe from light, will I survive well I might
If only then I can tell why, when I stumbled I didn’t cry

Away then demons dwell not here, I have company it’s called fear
The master waits soon I must go, he calls my name as if known well
And yet this place of sulphur tastes, is it no wonder I have no haste
To finally face my fate today, and lose my soul along the way

And so then tempter sulphurous grin, I’m never going to let you in
Before me memories unfold like flowers, to grow to live and die in hours
I listen to the symphony, that echoes here inside of me
Let me sleep and let me dream, in hopes that’s what my life has been

dear wordsmith,

first of all, you have chosen a name worthy of yourself and your writings! I loved this piece because I could relate it to my life. my favorite lines are:

Let my eyes light upon the light, and yes the dark
And a future that is bountiful, but contentment it is stark
Do not seek to tempt me, for in time you will grow to see
That both good and evil, reside side by side in me

profound!!!
*hugs, Cat

Cool name Wordsmith! It takes some big understanding and enormous courage to allow it all to happen inside of us, and there are plenty that will not be able to do it. When we wake in our castles, we are the enforcers of our royal rights. A sophisticated song echoing off of our amphitheater walls, is music to our ears, even when others can't hear it.
Very much enjoyed!
David

I enjoyed this reflection illuminating the undercurrents of life and what is in it for the reader. It is well written, which makes the meaningful words all the more enjoyable to read. I especially liked your closing verse. Thanks for sharing this with us, wordsmith. :)

This is such a rich and complex poem that I had to read it several times. You express spiritual anxiety and ambivalence beautifully. The meter of the poem carries the message wonderfully--the rhymes and progression never feel forced.

Best,
Dan N.
