Sometimes

Sometimes there is darkness in the light
And profound words fall on barren ground
We gravitate towards sin with smiling faces
Negotiating the slippery path of our descent
Some laugh in the face of adversity
Working hard to pay the price
Shaking heads well they surround me
Not once not twice but thrice

Sometimes in the dead of night
We reach for memories
They are fragile like glass leaves
Torn from the branches of our past
Borne upon the wind that is our regret
Knowing that they are not destined to last
And we sigh as moonlight bears witness
To misunderstood tears in our eyes

Sometimes we say yes and smile
While a no screams deep inside
And we run around excuses
Trying to find a place to hide
I recall my mother telling me
That monsters are not real
I wonder what she would say now
If I could tell how I feel
