Stones

Post by mikko » September 2nd, 2017, 7:24 pm

A little while ago I posted a poem called Pebbles. It is one of a series that I wrote set in a fictional place called Beacon.

Here is the poem that captures a moment some time before Pebbles.

Stones

we crunched unsteady
on the pebbles just below
the old stone seawall,
seeking sandy shade
under the Beacon pier,
where old grey piles
were decked in black and drying seaweed,
unclaimed tangled fishing lines
and rusty iron bolts.

on someone's upturned skiff
we found a seat
and while we watched
the scuttle of the little crabs
at water's edge
we talked of this and that,
a conversation random and relaxed,
just like the lazy slop
of wavelets in the sun,
against the dark-stained waterline.

i scooped a palm of pebbles,
smooth and white from water and from sun,
and played these hand to hand.

i pressed one to your cheek,
you felt its heat upon your skin,
then took it from my grasp,
and held it to your breast,
"this egg, i'll keep," you said,
"and you can have the rest."

one by one i flicked them out
to plop into the sea
through parabolic arcs,
the only chance these stones would have to fly,
to taste the weightless freedom of freefall,
to see more than the two dimensions
of their prison inside gravity.

when all but one had gone
i stood and gave the last a mighty throw,
"that's all," i said, "the final fling."

"but not for us, i hope," you said.

i took your hands and pulled you to your feet,
then put my hands around your hand,
the one that held your stone . . .

"no, not for us," i said.

While I do sense that this moment might be bittersweet, I'm really not sensing any sadness here. I did enjoy this little look into a moment in time and into a strangers thoughts. It was well written.

I let the sun on my skin.
Pretend I don't burn
I'm not burning here.
I just lay ash
On my eyelids,
And rub it deep into my
Bones.

This piece was a beautiful story told. I felt I was there with the speaker in this dreamy environment, half ethereal half tangible. The reader is transported, given a glimpse into this world and left wishing for more.
