Tale of the Gumiho: Fox Rain (long version)

Post by Lancer_Guardian » June 20th, 2013, 12:13 pm

They say that 'fox rain' is when a Gumiho (a Korean nine-tailed fox) is sad and sheds tears in order to cope with its sorrow. When it does so, there is rain that falls from the sky, possible even in the middle of a shiny, sunny day.

I gave a hand to this Gumiho, by drawing nine tails on its painting it was stuck in for 500 years. Its spirit came out of temple when I did this and the most beautiful and lovely girl appeared. Even though she was very pretty, she used me to get her out of her prison, a painting with a 3 Goddesses guarded by a Fox, the Gumiho in her original form.

She told me she could eat human beings' liver, saying that she was a very hungry Gumiho. I gave her meat in order to calm her hunger and as I did this, she developed a liking to me. After going into so much trouble always serving her and feeding her, I started to think about a way to lose her. Not only she was hassling me all the time, but there was Yoona, another girl that liked me, as I, myself, liked her, that I needed to find.

I tricked the Gumiho to get on a boat, saying I would join her later on but went my way. As I was walking, rain fell from the sky, it was in the middle of the afternoon. Did she see me running off as she was drifting away towards the sea?? Or was it suddenly a cloudy, stormy day that was churning about??

I was standing there, pondering to myself, getting soaked as people were running to shelter themselves. It is very unusual to have such weather at such time. I couldn't help but to feel sorrow myself while standing there close to the dock. The boat went away, slowly, drifting its path to elsewhere. I froze for a minute, thinking more, and then realized that right now was not a storm beginning... but a 'fox rain'.

Why would she be so sad that I left her?? Why is she crying this much while we separated?? I freed her from her prison, took care of her and fed her almost all the time... did she have something in return for me??

A very interesting story told in great detail and with flair. I must admit I have never heard of this 'fox rain' before but it sounds like a totally cool legend of sorts that I think I'll be looking up on wiki to get more info! This is a mighty fine piece of prose work! Your style of writing is very fluid and interesting and as a reader, I was engaged with this piece for the entire read! Job well done!

This is a compelling tale. I thought it was sadly touching too, I felt bad for the Gumiho at the end, like perhaps she was just misunderstood, a creature of another time and culture. And maybe felt a connection to the narrator. It's a really interesting write, capturing and I enjoyed taking it in. Thanks you for sharing it.

ladymaybebaby - I appreciate you having so much pleasure reading my prose, I was inspired by this korean drama that had used this legend in its story! Lol! I feel much gratitude having your words of my poem being fluid and interesting. I am encouraged into writing more! Thank you!!

ladylilith - Yes, the Gumiho character was in fact a mythical creature that came from the past and as it transported itself to the present day, it had to learn how to be human and adapt to this time of age. I was inspired by a korean tv drama was watching yesterday, it was a pretty sad moment as it had me writing this prose!! Much like a hurt that I needed to express because I felt the same as you about the Gumiho. Thank you for reading, I am pleased to have captured your imagination and enjoyment!!

Congratulations on your spotlight. I found your prose piece interesting and original. The voice of the narrator recounts his tale in quite a methodical and practical way that makes the mythical element in turn sound quite matter of fact. That is your skill as a storyteller and it worked mx

Although Korean mythology is alien to me, I was impressed by how you made this one universal. The mythological element still stood out, but I think you made it work by writing this in a very direct and straightforward way, in a voice of someone convinced by the mythology enough to be able to convince the reader. This was a little bit different for me to read, but I enjoyed it a lot.
Congratulations on the spotlight!

Larsen M. Callirhoe, everhopeful, I am glad that both of you enjoyed my mythological prose, I've inspired myself from a romance-korean-drama that used reference to it. I take your words to my heart and will enjoy writing more for you...

much love!

Congratulations on the spotlight. I enjoyed learning about the fox lady. I wondered about what kind of food the narrator of your tale was feeding the Gumiho.

Thank you, Josie, for you congratulating!! Well, in the drama, the gumiho was a fox and she said she was hungry and kept thinking about eating cow meat. Lol! The main character, then, decided to give cow meat to her, even though she would eat chicken. beef as well...

It's a pretty humorous drama, with few parts that would make you sigh, much like this poem I wrote, but all in all, it's a great one to watch!! a lot of asian people do that, in their spare time, watching dozens and dozens drama at home with their loved ones!! much like me!! :)
