Ha! I definitely wasn't expecting this to turn into a chemistry metaphor. I love it! This is a poem that can't be read just once. The first time it's like "what's the author getting at here?", and the second time it's like, "Aha! the narrator's mate is a nucleus!"
However, the chemistry nerd part of me would like to point out that a hydrogen with one electron (called a hydrogen free radical) is actually relatively rare in nature, and is highly reactive. Most of the hydrogen in the universe exists as H2, where the two electrons occupy the same bond. I would like to go on but I'll stop before you hit me...
