Wolves Dressed as Wolves
Wolves dressed as wolves
sheep's clothing no longer needed.
The body unrecognizable.
Prophetic wisdom no longer headed
seekers turned away
fertile ground no longer seeded
Little boy blue you sold your horn
too corrupt to notice the crows in the corn
Devour of the harvest
the flock over shorn
Its not for me I weep
but for them I mourn
Wolves dressed as wolves
ten percent they demand
It's not for me
but for Him
as they hold out their hand
For an extra love offering a healing I'll do
If it works, I'll claim victory
if it doesn't, it's you
It's the faith of a mustard seed you seem to lack
Perhaps you're not fully tithing
Perhaps you're holding back
But then...
There are the beautiful, precious, Grandmas and Grandpas
Bright and shinny as little children
They are bare of fleece and cold
but they keep giving.
You see, they give not to the wolves
but from their hearts they give to Him
And this is accounted to them as righteousness
and I love them
Wolves dressed as wolves stands at the door
Finished for the day
but just one thing more
A meet and greet formula some may call it
I shake with my right
the left covers my wallet
He pulls me in for a brotherly hug
long tooth grin so greasy and smug
Rancid his breath as he draws me near
'luv ya brother
whispered in my ear
trapped I feel panic
no place to go
Looking into my eyes
he knows that I know
Wolves Dressed as Wolves

Jeez. This gave me chills. I almost felt what you felt in those last lines. Good work.

Feel just a little sorry for the Grannies and Grampas,
but they have something good waiting for them, unlike those wolves.
Wonderfully eerie write!

A subtle immersion in the business of religion - and since it is of man, it is indeed a big business, and fallible. Really devoured the satirical elements employed here ES and the closing characterization was perfect. Cheers! - Dan

Re: Wolves Dressed as Wolves
My favorite lines: "If it works, I'll claim victory/If it doesn't, it's you." This strikes in two ways: it's an obvious commentary on the huckster televangelists and other pseudo-religious gurus, but it's also a haunting reflection on the fact that we'll never have confirmation of God's benevolent presence in our lives. There's always that sneaking suspicion that we might be projecting our desires onto reality and simply seeing what we want to see. A really thought-provoking piece!
Best,

Multiple ways to read your wonderful poem. A swipe at government or resentment of a mean family member. Either way, its a super write. Well done on the spotlight.
