There is a place, lake land
Where there sleeps the ruins of an
Abbey. Destroyed for the lust of one man,
A mortal made god, yes, and they have resurrected
From ashes cathedrals of gems and metal.
Now they stand in cold stone.
Grey merges into the horizon, the river
Flickers the mirage of it. Behind, beyond it
There stands a manor, red flecked, a construction
Of cement and sweat.
Inside do candles still flicker?
Do the shadows of the dead remember
The walls and footsteps, and do the old men
Of that dying generation feel
The touches of fragile spectral fingers imprinting their
Necks?
The horizon remembers, and for us, it creates.
We walk near the river, a crescent moon
Pervades and shimmers from the fluxing mirror
Of the water. Across the stones which struggle
With panting from ancient voices, ready to burst
The sound of the crashing flow reverberates in our ears.
We speak and smoke back cigarettes. You say with
Your hands, that you’re proud of my conversion to anarchism.
The scene is riddled with images and crystallized lights,
They intensify with the river, we reach with our speech
A euphoria, a eudaimonia. Paradoxes we solve in shimmering
Smoke light. We know we are the same.
And our minds plunge into the waters. The ghosts of sapling
Trees, now oaks in shadowy light, leaves us. The silent candles of
The house cease in their flickering waltzes. The ruins,
Rife in their holy lusts collapse in your eyes. The horses in the fields
Move sleepily in the darkness, the moon flickers
And our hands, entwined, are in a river
That is what it was, but can never be it again.

Re: Riverside Revelation
This is a really well done piece of poetry, especially in it's imagery. You've created very vivid visions of this spectacular landscape. I love the third stanza, I found it to be a very haunting bit of wondering. Like imagining the inside of an old house that everyone claims to be haunted, but that no one has actually been inside. It gives the poem a perfect little flair of mystery that is very enjoyable. Really nice done.
All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.

Re: Riverside Revelation
To me, it was like a bit of poignant analogy of past and present, and you've used the river as symbolism of pureness, that is simply fading with time because of man's greed. I love the openning stanza; a powerful beginning. The overall read was heavy on the imagery, and there's so much to take from this; it's put in thought-provoking way, and so wonderfully worded!
The last line has an impact on its own, there's something hinting about a change, that's so strikingly placed as being the ending.
Wonderful piece of poetry, thanks a lot for sharing!

Re: Riverside Revelation
There is no mystery this is only the product of the mind in all it's pain. The author is painting a picture of people essentially pondering the past and the present in a manner of uncertainty of time long gone now as they rush there hands through there reminiscence of what could have been or what was.Poetry defined

"leaves us" and the river flows to the sea. This was a visual feast of imagery and introspection, cheers!

Yes, that last stanza still holds that striking effect each time I read this. Absolutely a gripping poem with loud-echoing words and message.

Re: Riverside Revelation
When I read it the first time through I was immediately captured by the words and the images they invoked. It is indeed a feast of thoughts and lights and everything else. I see the house but it's not just a house. It's like a living thing. And then there's everything else. You have to read it again and again just to get half of it but it's simply beautiful.
