Stephanus Marcus (spenserian stanzas)

Post by ramfire » June 5th, 2014, 10:52 am

Stephanus Marcus
Book I Spenserian Stanzas
Canto I
Verse 1

Behold the knight as prancing steed doth seek
to stray from line behind man's comrades brave.
With gentle rein he stays the gait oblique
and makes the dancing gelding know, behave!
Some people wait to see them leave and wave
as riders file toward raised portcullis gate.
Sad families pray for peace in chapel's nave
that Virgin might assuage Duke Morley's hate.
Lord's mind's been troubled by Duke Saint Charles sore of late.

Delightful and wishing more poets would set such a fine stage when using the archaic language as expertly as you did in this period piece. Cheers RF and now congrats on the Spotlight too!

Your choice of form an pluralization of stanzas leads me to believe this could be the start of something epic. My research indicates the time frame is the third crusade? Intrigued.

Thanks much for sharing.

Very nice...it's always painful to see archaic language misused...but so pleasing when it's employed well as you did here! I loved those first four lines! What a splendid way to describe the rider taking control of the child, his mount. Beautifully done! - dew
