Office Politics

Post by unsinkmolly » July 9th, 2015, 6:40 am

“Nothing can be as perfect
as what you see in your own heart,”
he, the daddy-boss
said regretfully
as he took the opportunity
to remove his knife
from my back,
shrugging his shoulders
and shuffling his feet
in that sweet, little boy fashion
(eyes crinkled at the corners).
I smiled back, numb.
Grateful for the crumb.

We were in the eye of a hurricane
I had created.
I’d called upon the support of a father
and he was not, after all, that
though he’d been lapping up
the daughterly devotion
for so long
without question.

And the pimping mommy-women
had watched on archly,
basketing the benefits
of our association
but high-signing him
for my demise
(which with remarkable swiftness
he’d obliged)
as soon as I’d started
brokering for power.

Two women in the same house invoke memories of "The Highlander" Molly. "There can be only one" as they used to say in the previews / trailers. You took a complex subject and put things nicely in perspective here for many who find themselves similarly burdened I'd say. Daddy boss becomes the prize - a role I do not envy, especially if stepmothers are involved. Some things never change and hoping my impression here was on-target and if not; it was nevertheless much enjoyed and meaningful to me on a personal level.
Curious title, but applicable in both home and business environments, which makes this a double-threat on both fronts, cheers! - Dan (I can hear the sound of cat claws scratching)

Hey, Dan.

Thanks for taking this one on. Not familiar with Highlander.

It is based on an office scenario from years ago re my own life. It's about betrayal by a flirty but authoritarian boss who is too narcissistic and too ultimately cowardly and lazy to stand by a young woman's request for a well earned official upgrade at work. Her/my take.

She had aroused jealousy with fellow female workers and a female director over the success of her teaming with the guy. So she weathered the exclusion of the office long-term clique. She was fueled by her assumption of respect and appreciation from him for the enormous amount of effort she had been putting in. He was a demanding but exciting and charming boss in an interesting work environment

Her upgrade request was a heartbreaking reality check to her hope, trust and naivete and his attitude toward her and actual degree of power at the job. She quit.

The event also triggers grief over her own father's basic lack of commitment to her and his remoteness from the family.

best, molly

Alpha females are awesome; alpha males are only a mythical figment of the Neanderthal brain. Cheers again Molly and thanks for sharing the background info. Have a great vacation - Dan

Dan, thanks. I don't understand your alpha females are great and alpha males don't exist generalization. Not on vacation right now. Some of my poems are resurrected and recycled ones. Take care. best, molly

You all just let us think that we're in charge, but we figure it out eventually, cheers again! - Dan
