Memories Of Youth

Post by riversidepoet » June 8th, 2016, 7:03 pm

I have not been able to be here as much as I would have liked lately, last November I had to come out of retirement and took on a job, which at my age left me little time and even less energy to visit here much, I really miss it, posted a few challenges and that has been about it, hopefully in the coming days and weeks and months I will have more time for my first love which is writing, I hope this site will flourish in the coming days, I enjoy it here and I appreciate having a place to post my poetry and hopefully to get some feedback from others.

Memories of Youth

Apprehending memories of days when feet were swift
Perceiving exquisiteness in dreamy eyes adrift
When recollection was secure and did not waver
When stout hands clutched firmly and were without doubt braver

When matters of the tender heart danced unceasingly
Uncontrollably emotions swam an endless sea
When all sense of reasoning was lost in splendor
With the faith of a Prophet I marched as if to war

Without a need for understanding, blindly head-strong
With a convenient amnesia for right and for wrong
With conviction the inaugural chance was the last one
Unlearned was the knowledge of tomorrow’s setting sun

If repossession were an option would I go back?
Knowing all the battles fought and how the cards are stacked
No I really think not, I’ll take my scars and unpack
Sit here in my rocking chair and enjoy this flashback

One of my favorite poems by you Kent and it explains by example, so many exquisite concepts that go into making us who we are, and were, and why. Good to see you posting again my friend and cheers! - Dan

I enjoyed the four controlled stanzas of four lines each. All but one line had thirteen syllables. The aabb ccdd eeff gghh rhyme scheme and the numerous polysyllabic words added to the strong structure. This was a good choice because Narrator was depicted as no longer having swift feet and stout hands that could grasp firmly, yet the form of the poem gave the Narrator strength. Congratulations on the TPS Spotlight.
