In your dreams you have searched Me out
And have not known it
You feel an ache deep inside
And know not why
In the dark of the night you've called My name
And knew not that it was Me you called
You've searched for Me in everything
And found Me in nothing
But still you desire Me
You long to surrender all
But you are afraid to trust
For I am beyond your mind's grasp...
...Yet still I wait
And call your name
And have not known it
You feel an ache deep inside
And know not why
In the dark of the night you've called My name
And knew not that it was Me you called
You've searched for Me in everything
And found Me in nothing
But still you desire Me
You long to surrender all
But you are afraid to trust
For I am beyond your mind's grasp...
...Yet still I wait
And call your name
Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight...
(J.R.R. Tolkien, LOTR)
Let's Go Mets!
Keep calm and pass the puck to Zucc. LGR
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight...

Re: The Longing
So true! Reaching for what is beyond our grasp.
Really beautifully written!
"When faith opens out into a deep spiritual understanding
and advances beyond the range of concepts into a darkness
which can only be enlightened by the fire of love, man truly
begins to know God in the only way that can satisfy his soul."
Thomas Merton - "The Ascent to Truth" - p. 12

Re: The Longing
As you well know I've been here for many moons. I have also written something with a similar theme. But you have outstripped me with this piece!

Re: The Longing
"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for." (Robert Browning) As I heard a member of our church once say, "You never get tired of hearing the truth!" Indeed, man's search for Joy, is eternal! As a great spiritual leader, Russell M. Nelson said, "If we look to the world and follow its formulas for happiness, we will never know joy. The unrighteous may experience any number of emotions and sensations, but they will never experience joy! Joy is a gift (from Heavenly Father) for the faithful - parenthesis added. It is a gift that comes from trying to live a righteous life, as taught by Jesus Christ." Thanks so very much for sharing your soul stiring poem. anthony

Re: The Longing
Possibly God calling out to each of us?
In many ways we all desire God, but many do not know how to reach him.
Which is why he reaches down to us.
Brilliant spiritual poem, INF.

Thanks, TP, my friend!
We search so hard to find Him, when all along He's been right there.

Re: The Longing
Was instantly reminded of the mystic and poet St. John of the Cross. His love poems to God - Father, Son and Spirit - are searingly intense. I think yours is much gentler poetry and yet full of the same mixture of hope and pain.

Re: The Longing
Thank, DP.
I looked St. John of the Cross up after I read your comment - he wrote some great stuff! I'm going to see if I can find some more poems by him.

Re: The Longing
Calls from the deep INFPoet. Truly made me think about how much we care, and how much we must let go when trying to get there.
Very much enjoyed,
