Track No. 5

Post by MacUinseann » May 7th, 2019, 1:09 pm

It's only us tonight
our son is at the sitter's
We'll have a dinner out
come home and watch a movie
Snuggle, kiss a bit downstairs
before we go to bed
Not too much when all's laid out,
but when did we need much?

We step inside the door
dinner wasn't great
All the news was known already
and little else, besides
You looked gorgeous in that dress,
but I forgot to say so
Shoulders drooping with a sigh
you didn't ask for wine

I've known you long enough
the evening was a bust
The living room saw your hair unpinned,
falling across your neck
Surely the day was done, I grimaced
as I went to hang our coats
Kicking myself over and over
what a waste this was!
A date night every month or two
all there is for us
What stupid thing have I done now,
and why, oh why, today?

The coats were hung, I came back in
You were in the corner, crouched
kneeling by the stereo
From the speakers came distortion
haunting and melodic
Certainly not a love song,
the sound too raw for joy
Your fingers turned the dial slowly,
to where the neighbors gripe
The intro climbed into verse one
twisting knives of loss

Settled shy of deafening
you turned around to me
Finger beckoning,
until we stood together
Your hands laced then behind my neck
and mine, around your waist
The chorus in our veins

Not a note of happy years,
or comfort gained at last
set the time or sway
Only longing so profound
it ached in ways forever

I couldn't stare her in the eyes
my jaw had clenched by now
Only awakened by the slide
of her thumb across my neck
I looked into those orbs of ice
seeing love quite measureless,
wanting, reaching out

Closer she came,
her grip grew tighter
The music thrashed in violence
After tonight,
or even these two years
There's in that look a need,
the fact I'm always there
So we'll dance a little more,
and put off bed a bit

For in these darkest depths
we found we still believed
in these the hearts of summer

The unspoken language of love lies in the familiarity of touch and longing. A perfect meal is a devise of mood setting, but spontaneous reactions trigger the 'measureless moments you don't want to end. Memories like this last forever.

Ah... delightful poem. Sometimes things just fall into place. This poem conveyed that beautifully. Loved it

Mac-----I love reading your stuff. THIS WAS LIKE OMG. I mean seriously, the need, the longing, the artful way you led up to it and the words chosen to describe the buildup. I was totally rooting for your people. And at the end I was like yessss...

Love can't be taken for granted. Mind and heart shall be in unison and when it is Love is all around, encompassing and beautiful. Very nice write.

well done. You captured feelings that aren't that easy to capture...
I am left with the overwhelming sense of being stuck on a sinking ship.
