Poised upon the precipice between the old world and Elysium
Standing on that ledge when the safest memories reach out asking you to stay
As the painful ones prepare to sling their desperate ropes
You stand…tall as ever…knowing if you never leap…there won’t be a ledge someday
Friends and admirers cannot comprehend the need
So safe in their complacency
But one cannot live until they make their peace with breaking apart the past
It is just the past after all
And it seems no matter how destructively beautiful it has been
It holds no bearing on what could be
It is only a reminder of how protective this world is of its beauty
Every trap ever set was meant to test your strength
Testing everyone’s resolve against the ones who prey on our weaknesses
These seemingly evil souls are but angels in shadow
If we never broke down and broke apart
We certainly would never get this opportunity to rebuild ourselves
Break the design…for no design is ever perfect the first time
So you bravely step forward
Falling……No ropes can touch your skin…and as your toes leave the edge
Something beautiful happens
The world below becomes a mirror of the world above
The ones you love still waiting
And the ones that tried to hold you back
Frozen in time behind you forever
No longer capable of bringing pain
Landing on your feet
No more armor
Only flesh
Only true
Only pure
Unbreakably you

Re: Poised on the Edge
I really enjoy this free verse style of writing. It allows for plenty of poetic flair and yet keeps the flow personal and philosophical. So you get this story about yourself, your worldview, some really cool insights and some cool metaphors that elucidate philosophical exercises as well as personal struggles and triumphs. I dig prose writing for this reason, well, not only for this reason, I like essays too, but the free-verse is very cool and I think definitely has a place in the pantheon of worthwhile styles. If such a thing could be said to exist, which it probably doesn't. Good piece, much enjoyed.
